PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Brown men's tennis team was defeated by third-seeded Harvard, 4-2, on the first day of the ECAC Championship on Friday at the Hecht Tennis Center.
Brown, the six seed, won the doubles point but the Crimson would win four of the five singles matches for the win.
"We came up a little short today against a very skilled Harvard squad," said head coach Tim Gray. "I remain extremely optimistic about our chances with anyone when we compete like we have been competing as of late. We will learn from today and try to get better tomorrow."
Junior Peter Litsky (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and sophomore Ben Collier (Darien, Conn.) started the day with a 6-2 victory in third doubles. Harvard tied up the round by taking second doubles, 6-3. In the final match, freshman Roger Chou (Austin, Texas) and senior Charles Tan (Austin, Texas) upset No. 53 Logan Weber and Andy Zhou, 7-6 (14-12), in the first spot.
The Crimson opened singles with two-straight wins, in fifth and third singles, respectively. Litsky gave the Bears their first singles win in the top spot with a 6-1, 7-5 showing. Harvard was then able to edge Brown in the fourth and second singles matches to win 4-2.
The Bears will continue play at the ECAC Championship and will next face seventh-seeded Yale tomorrow (Feb. 16) at 9:00 a.m.
