BOSTON – Sophomore Ijeoma Uche (Lawrenceville, Ga.) set a school record in the long jump as the Brown men's and women's track & field teams wrapped up the opening day of the New England Championship Friday at the Reggie Lewis Center.
Â
Uche topped the field of 22 with a winning leap of 20-3.00 on her second jump, setting the school record as the first long jumper in school history to break 20 feet.
Â
"That was a great performance for Ijeoma," said head coach Tim Springfield. "Coach Hunt has been seeing that in practice, and we knew it was only a matter of time before she hit a big jump."
Â
Senior Owen Russell (Attleboro, Mass.) claimed the weight throw for the fourth time this season and just missed breaking his own school record with a winning toss of 71-10.00.
Â
"Owen put together the best series of his career, with four throws over 21 meters and his best throw just a centimeter shy of his school record," said Springfield.
Â
Rookie Calvin Perkins (Belmont, Mass.) was third in the preliminaries of the 500 meters at 1:04.06, advancing to the finals on Saturday, for the eighth-best time in school history. Sophomore Bretram Rogers (Grand Prairie, Texas) led the field in the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles at 8.05 to move on to the finals.
Â
Jason Katz (Wyckoff, N.Y.) was third in the men's long jump with a leap of 23-03.50.
Â
Ariel Silverman (Santa Monica, Calif.) earned the top time in the prelims of the 800 meters in a time of 2:14.05.
Â
Zion Lewis (Canton, Ga.) and Sydney Scott (Charlotte, N.C.) were second and third, respectively, in the preliminaries of 60 meters at 7.74 and 7.78, while May Stern (Providence, R.I.) took third in the 500-meter prelims at 56.57.
Â
Brown will complete the New England Championship on Saturday.
