NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Brown women's swimming & diving team was defeated by Yale, 173-127, in its season opening meet on Saturday at Payne Whitney Gym. Freshman Audrey Orange (New York City, N.Y.) picked up two wins in her first collegiate meet, taking victories in the 200 and 500 freestyle, to lead the Bears.
The rookies had a strong showing in the first meet of the year, with freshmen Nell Chidley (Mystic, Conn.) and Sasha Liu (Piedmont, Calif.) also winning events in their debut in addition to Orange.
"This was a very solid first outing for the 2019-20 team," said head coach Kate Kovenock. "We have been talking a lot about being process oriented and that's starting to click with individuals. I'm thoroughly looking forward to our next two weeks of training and racing opportunities."
Sophomore Emma Whall (Dover, N.H.) got things going for the Bears in the first individual event, the 1000 freestyle, taking third in 10:21.33. Orange next recorded the first victory of the day for Brown in the 200 freestyle, touching the wall with a time of 1:51.27.
Third place finishes were turned in by freshman Sage Matsushima (Huntington Beach, Calif.) in the 100 backstroke (56.67) and Liu in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.54). Liu later came back to pick up a win in the 200 IM (2:06.17).
Chidley next recorded a victory in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:02.35. Brown went 2-3 in the 100 of the event with Chidley (56.51) beating out teammate Matsushima (56.70).
Junior Taylor Seaman (Brighton, Mich.) won the 100 freestyle in 50.88 and took second in the 50 freestyle (23.67). The 500 freestyle saw Orange record her second victory, registering a time of 4:56.88. Senior Amelia Gilchrist (Greensboro, N.C.) also placed third in the 500 (5:05.58).
Senior Sarah Welch (Beverly, Mass.) finished second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:02.25.
In diving, sophomore Liv Mitchell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) and junior Julia Feord (Royal Oak, Mich.) took the top two spots in the 3M with scores of 265.65 and 257.48, respectively. Feord led Brown in the 1M, placing second with a score of 258.90.
The Bears closed the meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay (3:23.99) with Seaman, junior Tory Center (Madison, Wis.), Orange and senior Marley Cross (Seattle, Wash.) combining for the time.
