PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Brown women's swimming & diving team defeated Penn, 171.5-128.5 on Saturday at Sheerr Pool. The Bears finished 1-2-3 in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay to highlight some of the action.

"Penn can be a very tough team so this was a road win that just came down to being willing to race again and again," said head coach Kate Kovenock. "Diving continues to impress. Coach Miller is in a really productive spot with our women. On the swimming side, I was especially happy with how our women managed their energy, both physically and emotionally. And I have to give props to our 400 freestyle relays. Those twelve swimmers took it upon themselves to make a statement with a full team effort to cap off the afternoon."

The Bears opened with a victory in the 200 medley relay (1:44.83) from junior Taylor Seaman (Brighton, Mich.), freshman Sasha Liu (Piedmont, Calif.), freshman Sage Matsushima (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and senior Marley Cross (Seattle, Wash.).

Brown took the top three spots in the 200 freestyle with freshman Audrey Orange (New York City, N.Y.) leading the team in 1:51.99. Cross followed in second (1:53.14), just out-touching senior Amelia Gilchrist (Greensboro, N.C.) in third (1:54.18).

Matsushima and senior Sarah Welch (Beverly, Mass.) went 2-3 in the 100 backstroke with times of 57.30 and 57.80, respectively. Welch later came back to take second in the 200 of the event, finishing in 2:02.40.

Brown also went 2-3 in the 100 breastroke, with sophomore Audrey Lukawski (San Francisco, Calif.) claiming second (1:06.26) and Liu finishing third (1:06.76). Lukawski also came in second in the 200 breaststroke (2:21.57) while sophomore Miku Takabayashi (Glastonbury, Conn.) placed third (2:25.12).

Another 1-2-3 finish was turned in by Brown in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. Seaman nabbed the top spot in the 50 free (23:47) while sophomore Andrea Wei (Hopkinton, Mass.) (23.99, second) and junior Tory Center (Madison, Wis.) (24.02) followed. Seaman also won the 100 in 51.11 with Cross coming in second (51.71) and junior Claudia Wong (Los Angeles, Calif.) in third (53.15).

Orange won her second event of the day, the 500 freestyle, in 4:59.28 as Gilchrist came in third (5:05.11).

Freshman Nell Chidley (Mystic, Conn.) placed second in the 200 butterfly (2:04.50) and third in the 100 butterfly (56.74).

Junior Julia Feord (Royal Oak, Mich.) led the Bears on the 1M boards, posting a score of 269.09 for first place while senior Emily Zitkovsky (Lexington, Mass.) took third (238.57). Sophomore Liv Mitchell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) claimed the top spot in the 3M with a mark of 285.00 and Feord came in third (268.65). With their dives, both Mitchell and Feord qualified for the NCAA Zones Championships.

In the final individual event, Takabayashi won the 200 IM with a time of 2:04.83 and Liu came in second in 2:07.13.

Brown finished the meet with a statement, going 1-2-3 in the 400 freestyle relay. A quartet of Seaman, Center, Orange and Cross recorded the victory in 3:26.63. Wong, Gilchrist, Matsushima and Wei placed second (3:31.08) while freshman Elise Kreutzer (Portland, Ore.), Welch, Chidley and sophomore Maija Ninness (Santa Barbara, Calif.) finished third (3.33.79).

The Bears next host their first meet of the season, welcoming UConn to the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Saturday, Nov. 23 at noon.
