PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomores Claire Myers and Rebecca Rosen both scored goals, junior Sydney Cummings tallied two assists, and junior goalkeeper Maria Guerrero Martinez posted a shutout as No. 17 Brown University women's soccer defeated Merrimack College, 2-0, in its non-conference finale on Tuesday night at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
In their first game since clinching the Ivy League title and a berth into the NCAA Championships, the Bears (14-1-1) established a new program record for wins in a season (14) and matched the school record for shutouts in a season (12) with their win over the visiting Warriors (3-14-1).
"We knew tonight would be a battle given the fact that we had such an emotional and high-intensity game this weekend," Brown head coach Kia McNeill said. "I don't think we played our best game tonight, but we grinded out a result. Tomorrow we will get ready for Yale."
The Bears – ranked No. 6 in the NCAA RPI, No. 9 in the Top Drawer Soccer poll, and No. 17 in the United Soccer Coaches poll – won their 13th Ivy League title all-time with their 1-0 (2OT) win over Penn this past Saturday.
Brown is set to make its seventh all-time appearance in the NCAA Championships and first since 1994. The selection show for the championships will take place on Monday, Nov. 11 at 4:30 p.m. on NCAA.com. First round games will be played on either Nov. 15, Nov. 16, or Nov. 17.
On Tuesday against Merrimack, Brown increased its season goal total to 31 goals, marking the second time since 1994 that the team has scored 30 or more goals along with the 2006 team (37 goals).
Brown improved to 11-0-0 at home on the year, outscoring opponents 23-2. The 11 home wins stand as a single-season program record. The Bears extended their home winning streak to 14 games, outscoring opponents 34-3 and matching the program record of 14 straight home wins from 1976-78.
The Bears – ranked second in the NCAA in fewest goals allowed – posted their 12th shutout of the season as a team, matching the program record from 1984. Brown posted its fourth consecutive clean sheet.
Guerrero Martinez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) made one save in her second shutout of the season.
Cummings (Millstone Township, N.J.) played the full 90 minutes and has now played all 1,480 minutes on the season. She has helped Brown post 23 shutouts since the start of the 2017 season. Cummings leads the team with seven assists on the year and distributed two assists in a game for the second time in 2019.
Myers (Fairport, N.Y.) scored her third goal – and second game-winning goal – of the season while Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.) netted her second goal of the year. Myers and Rosen now have five and six career goals respectively.
Myers opened the game's scoring in the 33rd minute, finishing off a loose ball in the box at the 32:48 mark after a free kick from Cummings.
Rosen gave Brown a 2-0 lead in the 85th minute, knocking a rebound into the back of the net at 84:39 mark. After senior Celia Story (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) played a corner kick into the penalty area, Cummings kept the play alive before Rosen directed a shot into the goal.
