Women’s Tennis Closes Fall Season at Brown Classic

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's tennis team closed out the fall season on Sunday by hosting the Brown Classic. The Bears welcomed Boston College and Columbia to the Pizzitola Sports Center from Friday to Sunday.

"Our team faced tough competition this weekend against Boston College and Columbia," said head coach Lucie Schmidhauser. "Overall, I am pleased with the level of improvement this team has made this fall. We have set some pretty challenging performance goals, asking the players to get out of their comfort zone and play a game style that will help them move into the next level. Every change requires patience and commitment and I feel the team has responded very well and will continue to improve and grow."

Friday vs. Boston College
The Bears recorded one doubles victory and won five out of their six singles matches against the Eagles on Friday. Freshman Britany Lau (Kinnelon, N.J.) and junior Peri Sheinin (East Greenwich, R.I.) combined for the doubles win (6-1, third) while senior Devon Jack (San Marino, Calif.) highlighted Brown's play in singles, coming back to defeat No. 45 Yufei Long, 2-6, 6-2, 10-8.

Lau (7-6 (13), 6-3, second), junior Courtney Kowalsky (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) (6-2, 6-2, third) and freshman Gabriella Dellacono (Stonington, Conn.) (6-2, 6-0, sixth) won their matches in two sets while sophomore Ryan Peus (Palos Verdes, Calif.) took her contest after her opponent retired with her leading in the second set (4-2).

Saturday vs. Columbia
Two doubles teams and one singles player were in action for the Bears on Saturday, with the duo of Jack and Kowalsky coming away with a 6-4 win over the Lions.

Sunday vs. Columbia
The Lions had the Bears' number on Sunday, winning all seven singles matches and going two-for-three in doubles. Jack and Kowalsky won their second-straight doubles match, taking the match with a 7-5 score. Kowalsky put up a good fight in her third singles match, winning her first set (6-4), but was edged in the final two, 7-6 (0) and 7-6 (4).

"Devon Jack had great performances this weekend in both singles and doubles, showing willingness to be aggressive and finish points at the net," said Schmidhauser. "Devon has had a great fall and she will continue to lead our young team with her fight and competitive maturity. Courtney Kowalsky had a breakthrough weekend, beating a quality opponent from BC decisively on Friday and fighting her heart out against Columbia, losing a heartbreaking 7-6 in the third set decision. Courtney is maturing and growing as a competitor with each match."

The Bears will open the spring season on Monday, Jan. 20, hosting Boston College at 1:00 p.m.
