Lowell, Mass. – Obadiah Noel scored 13 of his game high 18 points in the second half to rally UMass Lowell (3-5) to a 75-63 win over Brown (4-2) Tuesday evening at the Costello Center.
Brown led 39-37 at the half and held its last lead, 57-56, with 7:14 remaining on a free throw and a 3-point basket by freshman Dan Friday (Detroit, MI).
Lowell took control with a 7-0 run to pull ahead, 63-57, with 5:36 remaining in the game, capped off by a Ron Mitchell trey.
Brown cut the lead to three points, 66-63, on a Josh Howard (Charlotte, NC) trey with 4:28 left on the clock, but that was as close as the Bears would get with the River Hawks scoring the game's last nine points.
"Unfortunately we didn't finish either the first half or the game well and those two stretches were enough to be the difference in the game," said Brown head coach Mike Martin. "We will get back to work and be ready for our next game."
Playing without injured senior Brandon Anderson, the nation's eighth leading scorer with 24.1 points per game, Martin turned to Friday to start in his place. Friday responded with a season high 13 points and three rebounds in 29 minutes of play.
Brown junior forward Tamenang Choh (Lowell, MA), playing in front of his hometown crowd for the first time, also scored 13 points, while pulling down five rebounds. Senior Zach Hunsaker (North Salt Lake City, UT) also scored in double figures for Brown with 11 points.
The Bears out-rebounded the River Hawks by a 42-32 margin, led by junior Matt DeWolf (Barrington, RI), sophomore Jaylan Gainey (Greensboro, NC) and Howard with seven rebounds each. Howard finished with nine points, while Gainey scored seven points with two blocks, and DeWolf added six points.
The Bears struggled from beyond the 3-point arc, connecting on 4-of-20 treys (20-percent), while Lowell converted 9-of-18 treys (50-percent).
Noel's 18 points came on 6-of-17 shooting from the field. Christian Lutete just missed a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Mitchell (11 points) and Josh Gantz (10 points) also scored in double figures.
Brown led by as many as 11 points in the first half, 35-24, following on two free throws by Hunsaker with 5:06 left in the half.
The River Hawks outscored the Bears 13-2 to tie the game, 37-37, on a 3-point basket by Gantz with 45 second left in the half. Choh hit a foul line jumper as time expired to give the Bears a 39-37 lead at intermission.
Brown returns to the hardwood on Saturday, November 30, hosting Navy at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Tip-off is 4:00 pm on NESN-plus, ESPN+ and WPRV AM 790.
