ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Sophomore Jack Bokina posted four wins, and freshman Ricky Cabanillas tallied three wins to pace Brown University wrestling at the 2019 Navy Classic on Saturday at the Wesley Brown Field House on the campus of the United States Naval Academy.
Â
The Bears totaled 17 wins on the day, including four victories from Bokina (Mattituck, N.Y.), three wins from Cabanillas (Whippany, N.J.), and pins from both junior 197-pounder Nino Bastianelli (Marysville, Mich.) and freshman 133-pounder Darby Diedrich (Howell, N.J.). Diedrich's fall came in 14 seconds.
Â
"The Navy Classic is always a strong event with multiple programs from power conferences," Brown head coach Todd Beckerman said. "Today was an opportunity for a lot of our young wrestlers to see that level of competition. We are still very early in the season and will learn from today as we continue to make improvements."
Â
Bokina tallied four straight wins at 157 pounds behind victories over opponents from George Mason, Navy, and No. 4 seed Matthew Dallara of Campbell. Bokina tallied multiple close victories, notching all of his wins by one or two-point decisions.
Â
Cabanillas registered three straight wins at 149 pounds, tallying victories over opponents from Kent State, Lock Haven, and Michigan State.
Â
Three Brown wrestlers – Bastianelli, senior Jimmy Pawelski (Park Ridge, Ill.), and sophomore Cade Wilson (Nazareth, Pa.) – each recorded two wins.
