
Atwell Wins NWPC Rookie of the Year, No. 19 Men’s Water Polo Tallies Four All-NWPC Honorees

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – No. 19 Brown University men's water polo freshman attacker Cole Atwell earned Northeast Water Polo Conference Rookie of the Year honors, and he and seniors Armen Deirmenjian, James Thygesen, and Hudson Rawlings all gained All-NWPC accolades, the Collegiate Water Polo Association announced on Friday.
Atwell (San Diego, Calif.) became the third student-athlete under Brown head coach Felix Mercado to earn conference Rookie of the Year accolades and the first since Henry Fox in 2011. Deirmenjian (Beverly Hills, Calif.) captured First Team All-NWPC while Atwell, Thygesen (Menlo Park, Calif.), and Rawlings (Murrieta, Calif.) all garnered Second Team All-NWPC.
Atwell has emerged as a consistent scoring threat for the Bears as a freshman, ranking second on the team in goals (47), while totaling 21 steals, 18 assists, 21 ejections drawn, and 12 field blocks.
Now a two-time All-NWPC selection, Deirmenjian garnered First Team All-NWPC for the first time in his career. He has led the team in steals (43) and field blocks (40), while tallying 37 goals, 44 assists, and 46 ejections drawn.
Earning All-NWPC laurels for the first time, Thygesen has led the Bears in goals (68), assists (47), and points (115) in 2019. He has also registered 15 steals and seven field blocks.
Collecting Second Team All-NWPC plaudits for the second straight year, Rawlings has recorded 24 goals, 38 assists, 20 steals, and 34 ejections drawn on the season.
The quartet and the No. 3 seeded Bears open play at the 2019 NWPC Championship with a first-round matchup against No. 6 seeded Iona today – Friday, Nov. 22 – at 4:00 p.m. at MIT's Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center in Cambridge, Mass.
