PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown field hockey team pulled within one goal late in the fourth quarter but Penn would hold off the Bears for a 3-2 win on Saturday at Goldberger Family Field on Senior Day. Following the contest, seniors Zoey Miller, Ali Dunning, Hannah Leckey, Corinne Condie and Gina Openshaw were honored in a postgame ceremony.
Junior Lexi King (Granby, Conn.) and sophomore Danielle van Rootselaar (Bilthoven, Netherlands) did the scoring for Brown (5-11, 1-5 Ivy League) while freshman Jodie Brine (Oxshott, U.K.) made eight saves, including one stop on a penalty stroke.
Penn (6-9, 4-2 Ivy League) benefited from its two scores in the first quarter and did not give up a Brown goal until 44:34 of the third quarter. Alexa Schneck gave the Quakers a two-goal lead at 55:42 which was the difference as van Rootselaar scored at 59:32 and Penn was able to prevent further scoring.Â
"We got off to a rocky start but settled into the game after the first period," said head coach Jill Reeve. "I am proud of how we fought back into the game. We had some unlucky calls against us that we couldn't overcome today."
Erin Kelly put the Quakers on the board just 1:07 into the contest and Erin Quinn quickly make it 2-0 in favor of the visitor's at 4:54. No scoring in the second quarter would send the Bears into the break down 2-0. Neither team recorded a penalty corner in the first half while Penn held a 9-1 advantage in shots.
Brown's offense started to click in the third, outshooting Penn 5-4 while King's score at 44:34 brought the Bears within one (2-1) to close out the frame. Brine came up big in the stanza, saving a penalty stroke at 37:34.Â
Schneck was successful on Penn's second penalty stroke attempt at 55:42 and created the distance in the score the Quakers needed. Van Rootselaar notched her team leading eighth score of the year at 59:35 with the help of freshman Emma Rothkopf (Wilton, Conn.) but it would be too late. The Bears pulled Brine out of the cage but the period would end before Brown could generate a scoring opportunity.Â
Penn would hold the overall advantage in penalty corners (6-4) with a 2-1Â lead in the third and a 4-3 edge in the fourth. Shot also favored the Quakers, 18-9, for the afternoon. Ava Rosati finished with five saves in the Penn cage.Â
