NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Brown field hockey team closed out the 2019 season with a 4-1 loss at Yale on Saturday at Johnson Field. Junior Lexi King (Granby, Conn.) scored the lone goal for the Bears in the contest.
Yale (7-10, 3-4 Ivy League) took a 2-0 lead after the first half of play with a goal in both the first and second quarter, but Brown (5-12, 1-6 Ivy League) bounced back with King's score in the fourth, her second-straight game with a goal. The Bulldogs were able to close out the period with two more goals to thwart off a comeback. Â
"We fought our way back from a 2-0 deficit and got the goal and we really felt like we were back in the game and taking control, but we had one poor decision that led to Yale's third goal," said head coach Jill Reeve. "I felt we were over extended as we tried to get the lead back. I'm very proud of our team and their effort today. Yale produced when they had opportunities and we needed to cash in on our chances."Â
Yale took a 1-0 lead on a score from Bridget Condie at 12:20 of the first. Lena Ansari made it 2-0 on a penalty corner before the end of the half with her second quarter score (19:18). Each team generated three shots in the first while the Bulldogs held a 5-3 edge in the second. Both teams took two penalty corners in the first and one apiece in the second.Â
Brown controlled the game in the third quarter and outshot Yale 7-1. The Bears kept up the pace in the fourth as King put Brown on the board at 47:38 with her third score of the season on a pass from sophomore Danielle van Rootselaar (Bilthoven, Netherlands).Â
The Bulldogs were able to counter and halt the Bears' momentum when Anissa Abboud scored back-to-back goals at 53:14 and 55:17 to put the game out of reach.
Overall, Brown outshot Yale 17-13 while the Bulldogs had a 5-4 advantage in penalty corners.Â
Freshman Jodie Brine (Oxshott, U.K.) finished with two saves in the cage while Yale's Sydney Terroso made five saves in the opposing goal.
