Sacred Heart Topples Cold Shooting Brown, 84-63

Fairfield, Conn. -Â Â Koreem Ozier scored a game high 28 points to lead Sacred Heart (1-3) to its first win of the season, 84-63 over Brown (3-1), who had its three game winning streak snapped by the Pioneers.Â

Sacred Heart connected on 27-of-54 field goals (50-percent), while holding the Bears to just 38-percent shooting from the field (25-of-66), including 5-of-25 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc.

"We'll learn from tonight's and  use it to improve going forward," said Brown head coach Mike Martin. "Credit Sacred Heart for how well they played, but we need to be and will be better."

Bears' sophomore Jaylan Gainey (Greensboro, NC) provided a strong presence in the paint, scoring a career high 14 points on perfect 7-of-7 shooting from the field that featured six dunks and a tip-in. He also had three blocked shots, matching his career best,  and three rebounds.

Brown junior forward Tamenang Choh (Lowell, MA) finished the game with 12 points and eight rebounds before fouling out with 4:43 remaining, breaking his streak of three straight double-doubles. Bears senior Brandon Anderson (Mahwah, NJ) scored 12 points and handed out six assists, while senior Zach Hunsaker (North Salt Lake City, UT) chipped in with 10 points.

Ozier's 28 points came on 9-of-15 shooting from the field, while connecting on 4-of-6 3-point attempts. EJ Anoskie posted a double-double for the Pioneers with 16 points and 13 rebounds.Â

Brown struggled early against the Pioneer zone, falling behind 25-16, on a 3-point basket by Aaron Clarke at the 8:58 mark of the opening half.

The Bears answered with a 7-0 run to get back in the game, trailing 25-23, on a layup by Anderson. Brown evened the score, 27-27, on an Anderson 3-point basket with 6:23 remaining, and grabbed the lead, 28-27 on a free throw by Matt DeWolf.

When the dust settled, Brown trailed 39-38 at the half with Ozier scoring 17 points for the Pioneers.

With the score tied, 43-43, Sacred Heart broke the game open with a 10-0 run, ignited by a trey by Aaron Clarke at the 15:59 mark of the second half and completed with a layup by Anoskie with 14:33 left to play, giving the Pioneers a 53-43 lead.

The closest Brown got down the stretch was seven points, trailing 68-61, with 6:32 remaini9ng on a Josh Howard layup.

A 14-0 run by Sacred Heart over the next five minutes put the game out of reach, 82-61.

Brown returns to the home hardwood on Saturday, November 23, for a late afternoon matchup against NJIT at the Pizzitola Sports Center, starting at 4:30 pm.
