Fencing Teams Combine for 10-2 Mark at First Conference Meet

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University fencing combined for a 10-2 record on the day as the women's team went 6-1 and the men's side finished 4-1 at Northeast Fencing Conference Meet No. 1 on Saturday at Brown's Olney-Margolies Athletic Center.

"I'm very pleased with our fencing at this season's opening event!" Brown head coach Alex Ripa said. "Our women's foil and men's epee squads were undefeated, and individual fencers turned in amazing stats. We had one loss overall, after fencing seven schools for the women's team and five for the men's team. An impressive start to this season's campaign!"

The women's team tallied victories over Boston University (24-3), Sacred Heart (21-6), Smith (25-2), New Hampshire (24-3), Massachusetts (24-3), and Wellesley (14-13), while falling to Boston College (16-11). Overall, the women's side outscored its opponents 144-45.

The men's team topped Boston University (25-2), Sacred Heart (18-9), New Hampshire (24-3), and Massachusetts (20-7), while dropping a narrow decision to Boston College (14-13). The Bears' men's side outscored its opponents 100-35 overall.

At the squad level, women's foil went undefeated at 7-0 (58-5 composite) as did men's epee at 5-0 (32-13 composite). Women's sabre finished 6-1 (53-10), and men's sabre notched a 4-1 mark (33-12). Men's foil finished 3-2 (35-10), and women's epee went 4-3 (33-30).

Freshman Anisha Kasi (New City, N.Y.) led the women's foil squad with an 18-0 record while sophomore Anna Susini (Lexington, Ky.) and junior Elena Jin (Fremont, Calif.) went 15-1 and 13-3 respectively. In women's sabre, junior Signe Golash (Syracuse, N.Y.) and freshman Casey Chan (Cresskill, N.J.) posted marks of 20-1 and 19-2 respectively. Junior Arianna Ferretti (Old Field, N.Y.) paced women's epee with a 12-9 record.

On the men's side, freshman Nick Andrade (Quincy, Mass.) registered a 14-1 mark in men's foil while classmate Ryan Scarpa (Manhasset, N.Y.) supported him in the weapon with a 12-3 mark. In men's sabre, freshman Ronald Yuan (Birmingham, Ala.) posted a 13-2 record, and junior Sean Feeney (Riverside, R.I.) finished 9-3. In men's epee, sophomores Timmy Frank (Portland, Ore.) and Benjamin Ryjikov (Scarsdale, N.Y.) tallied records of 8-1 and 12-3 respectively.

Next, Brown competes at the Sacred Heart Invitational on Sunday, Dec. 8 in Fairfield, Conn.
