FARMVILLE, Va. – Senior guard Justine Gaziano scored a game-high 22 points, but Brown University women's basketball fell at Longwood University, 86-76, on Saturday afternoon at Willett Hall.
The Bears (2-2) remained within 73-71 with 3:13 to play before the host Lancers (2-2) closed the game on a 13-5 run, including making 7-of-8 free throws inside of the final 39 seconds.
"We didn't play quite as well defensively today but still had a chance to win the game," Brown head coach Sarah Behn said. "We had some solid stretches but just need to be more consistent over 40 minutes. It was nice to see Haley Green play well in her home state."
Gaziano (Natick, Mass.) scored her 22 points on 8-of-18 field goals and 3-of-8 3-pointers, eclipsing the 20-point plateau for the second straight game. She has scored 20 or more points 31 times in her career and scored in double figures 71 times over the last four years.
Returning to her home state, senior center Haley Green (Salem, Va.) registered nine points on 3-of-3 field goals and 3-of-4 free throws alongside four rebounds and a career-high four blocks.
Sophomore guard Traiva Breedlove (Rochester, N.Y.) totaled eight points and six rebounds, freshman guard Sydney Rosant (Foster City, Ga.) scored eight points in seven minutes, and junior guard Dominique Leonidas (Stone Mountain, Ga.) added seven points, four rebounds, and four assists.

The Bears remained ahead 22-17 at the end of one as Gaziano hit a jumper to close the frame's scoring.
The Bears maintained a lead for the majority of the second quarter before the Lancers tied the score at 36-36 with 1:14 to play in the half. A free throw from sophomore guard Maddie Mullin (Wellesley, Mass.) and a jumper from Gaziano allowed Brown to re-gain a 39-38 lead at halftime.
A 15-0 run behind 3-pointers from Leonidas, Gaziano, and Mullin extended Brown's lead to 55-40 with 6:01 to play in the third quarter as a layup from Green capped the burst. The Lancers then outscored the Bears 20-2 to pull ahead 60-57 with 1:11 left in the stanza. Brown remained within 62-59 heading to the fourth frame.
