CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Despite a career-high 55 saves from senior Calla Isaac (Sherwood Park, Alberta), the Brown women's hockey team fell to the Crimson, 4-1, to open ECAC play on Friday at The Bright-Landry Hockey Center.
The Bears held the Crimson scoreless in the second period, aided by 20 saves by Isaac, and entered the third period trailing by just one (2-1). Sophomore Shay Maloney (McHenry, Ill.) produced the lone score for Brown, giving her points in back-to-back games.
"Harvard is a fast and poised team," said head coach Carisa Zaban Wahlig. "Ultimately, we had a few breakdowns and couldn't stay with them for three full periods. We had some great individual effort at times tonight."
Harvard (2-0-0, 2-0-0 ECAC) opened the matchup with a 2-0 advantage with scores at 6:20 (Anne Bloomer) and 14:37 (Keely Moy) of the first period. Maloney got Brown (0-3-0, 0-1-0 ECAC) back in the contest with her first goal of the season at 17:04 with assists coming from junior Megan Forrest (Enfield, Nova Scotia) and senior Lucinda Quigley (Newton, Mass.). The Bears closed the period on the penalty kill, fighting off the first half of an infraction.
The Bears had three power-play chances in the second but could not generate a game-tying goal. Neither team scored in the stanza that saw Harvard lock down the Brown offense. Isaac came up big in the frame, stopping all 20 shots she faced, bringing her game total to 37.
Katie Tresca gave Harvard some breathing room with her tally at 8:37 of the third and Bloomer added her second of the day at 15:09 for the final of 4-1.
Isaac finished the contest with 55 saves, topping her previous collegiate best of 48. Beth Larcom concluded the evening with 13 saves in the opposing net.
Harvard outshot Brown, 59-14 overall while each team was shutout on the power play, with the Crimson 0-for-2 and the Bears 0-for-3.
Brown will wrap up the weekend tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 2) at Dartmouth starting at 3:00 p.m.
