Women’s Hockey Names Captains for 2019-20

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's hockey head coach Carisa Zaban Wahlig has announced that senior Veronica Alois (Andover, Mass.) and junior Abby Nearis (Beverly, Mass.) will serve as team captains for the 2019-20 season, while sophomore Shay Maloney (McHenry, Ill.) will serve as an assistant captain.
A constant presence up front for the Bears, Alois has appeared in 70 career games and has contributed 11 goals and 12 assists for 23 points. She is coming off of a collegiate best nine points last year which included a goal and an assist in an upset win over No. 6 Cornell.
Nearis, an assistant captain as a sophomore, leads the defensive unit this season after playing in 56 career contests. The blueliner recorded two goals and five assists in 2018-19.
Maloney, the team's Most Valuable Player a year ago, returns after a stellar rookie campaign in which she recorded seven goals and a team-high 11 assists for 18 points. Her three power-play goals also led the squad.
The Bears open the season with five straight road games, starting at RIT on Friday, Oct. 25. Brown's home opener at Meehan Auditorium will come against Rensselaer on Friday, Nov. 8 starting at 6:00 p.m.
