NEW YORK - The Brown men's soccer team's comeback fell short at Columbia with the Bears falling to the Lions, 3-2, on Saturday in their Ivy League opener at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium.
After trailing 2-0, Brown (1-6-1, 0-1-0 Ivy League) recorded two consecutive goals, with senior Daniel Schiller (Glenview, Ill.) scoring the first and assisting the second, however, Columbia (3-3-2, 1-0-0 Ivy League) would net the go ahead tally at 73:32 and hold on for the win.
"We dug ourselves a hole in the first half that we did really well to climb out of it early in the second half," said head coach Patrick Laughlin. "We scored two nice goals and our performance in the second half was very good. Ivy matches are extremely tight and we need to have a more consistent performance over 90 minutes."
The Lions built a 2-0 lead going into the break with scores from John Denis (11:02) and Matthew Swain (43:03). The first half ended with Columbia outshooting Brown, 7-2, while the Bears had the only corner kick of the stanza.
Schiller pulled Brown within one (2-1) at 51:13 when he collected a pass from junior Will Mims (Asheville, N.C.) and got his shot past Columbia's Michael Collodi. Schiller then assisted the tying score when freshman Owen Schwartz (Mill Valley, Calif.) connected on a header at 59:18 for his first-career goal.
Sophomore James Swomley (Newton, Mass.) stopped a penalty kick by John Denis at 73:30 but Denis was able to put back his rebound for the go-ahead score at 73:32.
Sophomore Derek Waleffe (Madison, Wis.) registered a shot on target at 81:30 but Collodi made the save to help lead the Lions to their victory.
Junior Max Gross (Halifax, Nova Scotia) made one save in the start for Brown while Swomley finished the contest making three stops in the second half.
Shots favored Columbia 8-5 in the second but the Bears held a 5-4 advantage with shots on goal. Overall, the Lions outshot Brown 15-7, 7-5 on goal. In a game of few corners, Brown took three while the Lions had one.
Brown next continues conference play and will host Princeton at Stevenson-Pincince Field on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 7:00 p.m.
