
Brown Falls To URI, 31-28, In Thrilling Governor’s Cup Game; EJ Perry Racks-up 512 Total Yards for Bears

Bears' junior quarterback EJ Perry (Andover, MA) threw for 420 yards and ran for another 92 yards, accounting for 512 yards of total offense, the second highest total in Brown football history. He completed 32-of-52 passes, including touchdown passes of five, 25 and two yards.
Sophomore tailback Allen Smith (Westerville, OH) accounted for three touchdowns - one on the ground and two receiving. Senior Jakob Prall (Tipp City, OH) made some big plays, making five catches for 111 yards, while senior Emerson Logie (New Canaan, CT) made five receptions for 87 yards. Freshman Hayes Sutton (Norcross, GA) caught five passes for 62 yards, while senior Demitri Jackson (Nashua, NH) pulled in four passes.
Defensively freshman Cooper DeVeau (Foxboro, MA) and senior Brendan Pyne (Bradenton, FL) made eight tackles each. Senior Michael Hoecht (Oakwood, OH) had 1.5 quarterback sacks and now has 15 career sacks, tied for fourth place on Brown's all-time list with James Develin '10, now with the New England Patriots.
"That was an incredible game," said Brown head coach James Perry. "We practiced well all week and knew the game would come down to the last seconds. If we can maintain that effort we'll be a really good team. We played hard and aggressively, and it's a good reflection of where we are as program."
Rhode Island quarterback Vito Priore had a big day for the Rams, completing 31-of-44 passes for 389 yards and three touchdowns. Isaiah Coulter registered 12 catches for 172 yards and a touchdown, while Aaron Parker had seven receptions for 94 yards and two touchdowns.
Brown struck first, driving 61 yards in eight plays with Perry connecting on a five-yard touchdown pass to Smith, giving the Bears a 7-0 lead with 9:53 left in the opening quarter. Perry connected on 5-of-6 passes on the drive, including a 32-yard shuffle pass to Logie.
The Rams tied the game, 7-7, when Priore tossed an 18-yard touchdown pass to Coulter with 3:48 left in the quarter. Priore connected on a nine-yard scoring pass to Parker on the Rams' first possession of the second quarter to lift Rhode Island to a 14-7 advantage.
Perry's second touchdown pass went to Spencer Hemmingway (Roswell, GA), a 25-yard strike in the back of the end zone, to tie the game, 14-14, with 3:14 left in the half.
A late Rams' field goal, a 34-yard boot by C.J. Carrick, gave URI a 17-14 lead at intermission.
Rhode Island extended its lead to 24-14 early in the third quarter on a seven-yard run by Zoe Bryant.
Smith got the Bears back in the game with a three-yard touchdown run on the second play of the fourth quarter to trail 24-21. The three-yard touchdown run capped an 81-yard scoring drive with the big play a 46-yard pass play from Perry to Prall.
Brown grabbed a 27-24 lead on another 81-yard drive with Perry tossing a two-yard touchdown pass to Smith with 8:20 remaining in the game.
Rhode Island went back up by three points, 31-28, on a 63-yard drive with Priore tossing a 14-yard touchdown pass to Parker with 5:43 left on the clock.
Brown continues its three-game home stand with a non-league matchup against Holy Cross on Saturday, October 12. Kick-off on ESPN+ is 12:30pm at Brown Stadium.
