PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown field hockey team's strong second half led to a 3-1 victory over Dartmouth on Saturday in Ivy League action at Goldberger Family Field. Sophomore Danielle van Rootselaar (Bilthoven, Netherlands) factored in all three of the Bears' goals, assisting the first two while providing the game's final tally.

"It was a really great team win," said head coach Jill Reeve. "I was happy with the way we attacked the game. We were marginally flat in the first half and were able to pick it up in the second half which made all the difference."

After a scoreless first half, Brown (3-6, 1-1 Ivy League) scored the first goal of the afternoon in the third and added two more in the fourth to hold off Dartmouth (3-6, 0-2 Ivy League).

In a 0-0 opening half, the Bears held the advantage in shots at 8-3 while holding the Big Green without a shot on goal. Cecelia Monnin came up with a defensive save for Dartmouth while Isabella Santucci added two more stops in the cage. The Bears took the only penalty corners with two in each period.

Senior Gina Openshaw (Annapolis, Md.) put Brown up 1-0 at 32:34 of the third with her fourth tally of the season after she received a long pass from van Rootselaar and drove in for the score. The goal is the 19th of her career which ties her with Denise Dimitre '83 for 13th all-time.

With a 1-0 lead entering the fourth, senior Hannah Leckey's (Madison, Conn.) deflection at 47:00 gave the Bears a two-goal cushion while van Rootselaar picked up her second assist of the afternoon.

Tatum Schultz pulled Dartmouth within one (2-1) with a deflection at 48:28 but a score by van Rootselaar soon after (50:19) put the game out of reach. Senior Corinne Condie (St. Louis, Mo.) fed van Rootselaar a pass from the endline for her fourth goal of the season.

The Bears outshot the Big Green 9-7 in the second half and 17-10 overall. Corners favored Dartmouth in the second, 5-3, with three coming in the third period.

Monnin added two more defensive saves in the second half for Dartmouth while Santucci contributed two stops. Freshman Calista Manuzza (North Caldwell, N.J.) went the distance in the cage for Brown and made three saves in the second half.

Brown returns to non-conference action on Thursday, Oct. 10, welcoming Cal to Goldberger Family Field at 4:00 p.m., before resuming Ivy play at Harvard on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 1:00 p.m.
