PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown field hockey team defeated Cal, 3-2, with a fourth quarter goal by sophomore Danielle van Rootselaar (Bilthoven, Netherlands) on Thursday at Goldberger Family Field.
The Bears (4-6) scored two quick goals in the first quarter but Cal (4-8) came back to tie it, 2-2, with a tally in the third and early in the fourth. Van Rootselaar provided the game winner on a penalty corner with junior Kelly Raymond (Salem, N.H.) and senior Hannah Leckey (Madison, Conn.) combining on the assists.
"We came into this game prepared and ready to compete," said head coach Jill Reeve. "We started strong and didn't' let up for 60 minutes. Hannah Leckey and Danielle van Rootselaar had an excellent performance today.Â
Brown got off to a fast start in the opening quarter with two goals in the first 11 minutes. Leckey registered the first score at 5:22 on a pass from senior Ali Dunning (Amersham, England) in front following a penalty corner while van Rootselaar recorded the second on a breakaway at 10:38.
A scoreless second period, aided by three saves from freshman Calista Manuzza (North Caldwell, N.J.), brought the teams to halftime. The Bears had a 4-2 advantage in shots for the first quarter but Cal outshot Brown, 4-0, in the second. Penalty corners were split with each team taking one, Brown's coming in the first.
Cal tied it up quickly in the second half as Monica Arteaga scored at 41:35 and Gabi Jimenez registered a goal at 46:44 to bring the game to 2-2.Â
The Bears could not convert while Cal was a player down on a yellow card, but a penalty corner followed at 52:29 which was all that Brown needed as van Rootselaar fired in the game winner at 53:03. The Bears were then able to hold onto possession and run out the clock.
Manuzza notched the win in the cage for Brown and tied her career-high with five saves. Cato Knipping received the loss on the other side in three quarters of play while making two stops. Natalie Dalton started the game and made one save in the opening 15 minutes.Â
Shots slightly favored Cal for the second half, 6-5, and overall, 12-9. The Bears had a 2-1 penalty corner edge, with all three coming in the fourth frame.Â
