ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Brown women's hockey team was defeated by RIT, 6-0, to open the 2019-20 season on Friday at the Gene Polisseni Center. The Tigers took advantage of the power play, scoring three goals on their five chances.
RIT (1-5-1) opened the contest with a strong first period, scoring four goals to pull away early. Brown (0-1-0) limited the Tigers through the final two periods, allowing just two goals and outshooting the home team a combined 28-10 in the two frames.
"I thought the players worked very hard and put the effort in all three periods," said head coach Carisa Zaban Wahlig. "We have to capitalize on our power play because it can be a momentum changer as RIT demonstrated in the first period. Hopefully we can bounce back tomorrow."
RIT jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first 20 minutes of action. Jaymee Nolan netted the first score at 10:38 and Hunter Barnett and Logan Land added back-to-back power-play tallies at 11:00 and 12:09, respectively, for a 3-0 advantage. Barnett put in her second of the night at 15:58 to conclude the scoring in the period. Shots ended 16-9 in favor of RIT while the Tigers went 2-for-3 on the power play.
Brown outshot RIT in the second period, 12-10, and had six power-play opportunities but could not find the back of the net in the stanza. Rachel Goff added RIT's third power-play goal at 17:40 for a 5-0 lead while the Tigers were 1-for-2 in power-play chances.
Reaghan Pietrowski scored an early goal for the Tigers to begin the third (1:44) while the Bears again outshot RIT, 16-10. Brown came up empty again on the power play, going 0-for-4.
Sophomore Lizzy Gross (Scarborough, Maine) paced the Bears with seven shots and was followed by sophomore Tina Paolillo (East Haven, Conn.) (six shots), senior Lucinda Quigley (Newton, Mass.) (five shots) and senior Veronica Alois (Andover, Mass.) (five shots).
Senior Calla Isaac (Sherwood Park, Alberta) made 18 saves while allowing just two goals in two periods of action while sophomore Hayley Kliczko (Niles, Ill.) turned away 12 shots in the first.
RIT was led by Jessi O'Leary who made 37 save in the shutout while Barnett led the scoring attack with two goals and an assist.
Brown closes out the RIT series tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 26, starting at 2:00 p.m.
