SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Senior James Thygesen and freshman Cole Atwell each tallied six points, but No. 19 Brown University men's water polo fell to No. 11 Loyola Marymount University, 12-11, on Friday afternoon at the Sullivan Aquatic Center on the campus of Santa Clara University.
Playing in their first game at the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament, the Bears (14-9) used a 4-1 run to cut a 10-6 deficit late in the third quarter into an 11-10 margin with 3:35 to play before the Lions (9-8) held on for the win.
"We competed hard today against the No. 11 team in the country but just came up a little bit short," Brown head coach Felix Mercado said. "We have three more competitive games ahead of us this weekend so that is where we will turn our attention now."
Thygesen (Menlo Park, Calif.) posted his six points on three goals and three assists while Atwell (San Diego, Calif.) notched his six points on four goals and two assists to go with three ejections drawn.

In the cage, sophomore goalkeeper Ugo Piovan (Vouliagmeni, Greece) made 13 saves for his fifth double-figure save performance of the season.
Brown opened the game with a 2-1 lead behind goals from Rawlings and Penner before LMU netted a pair of goals to take a 3-2 edge at the end of one. A goal from Atwell knotted the score at 3-3 early in the second quarter, but the Lions responded with a goal to bring a 4-3 advantage into halftime.
After LMU used a 3-0 run to open the second half and gain a 7-3 edge, a tally from Atwell and three goals from Thygesen helped Brown pull within 10-7 heading to the fourth quarter.
A goal from Berkman to open the final stanza cut the margin to 10-8 before LMU went back up 11-8. Atwell countered with back-to-back goals to trim the deficit to 11-10 with 3:35 to go. Following another LMU marker, Simko scored to make the margin 12-11 with 38 seconds left before the Lions held on for the win.
