PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Coming off a season in which the Bears sent four wrestlers to the NCAA Championships, Brown University wrestling will prepare for the EIWA and NCAA Championships in March with a 2019-20 schedule that allows the Bears to compete against elite competition in events across the country, head coach Todd Beckerman announced on Wednesday.
Â
"Every year we want to create a schedule that challenges our student-athletes to rise to the occasion," Beckerman said. "We know that our wrestlers will be in the national spotlight come March, and we look to design a schedule that prepares them for success in those moments."
Â
In 2018-19, the Bears posted four NCAA qualifiers, tallied six EIWA placers in back-to-back years for the first time since 2000, placed eighth as a team at the EIWA Championships – marking the program's highest finish at the conference tournament since 2004 – and totaled five All-Ivy selections for the first time since 2008.
Â
With its 2019-20 schedule, Brown will compete at multiple prestigious tournaments, including the Navy Classic and Midlands Championships, travel to the state of Virginia and Washington, D.C., and take on several EIWA foes during the dual season as the program preps for its championship events in March.
Â
"Over the last few seasons, we have proven that our program can make its mark in March," Beckerman said. "With that, our student-athletes recognize how important it is to compete at a high level every weekend in order to be ready for the EIWA and NCAA Championships."
Â
After an unofficial start to the season at the Brown & White Wrestle-Offs (Nov. 2), the Bears begin intercollegiate competition at the Northeast Collegiate Classic (Nov. 10). Brown then competes at the Navy Classic (Nov. 23) and Cougar Clash (Dec. 7). The team heads to the state of Illinois for the prestigious Midlands Championships (Dec. 29-30) before closing the tournament portion of its slate at the F&M Open (Jan. 4).
Â
The dual season begins at American (Jan. 10) – the Bears' EIWA opener – and at George Mason (Jan. 11) as the Bears travel to Washington D.C. and Virginia. Coming back to the Northeast, Brown competes at Bucknell (Jan. 19), Franklin & Marshall (Jan. 19), Binghamton (Jan. 25), and Cornell (Jan. 25). The dual with the Big Red marks the Bears' Ivy opener before the team competes in one final in-season tournament at the JWU Wildcat Open (Jan. 26).
Â
Brown hosts its first dual meets of the year on Feb. 1 as the Bears entertain Penn (12:00 p.m.) and Princeton (2:00 p.m.) in a pair of Ivy League duals.
Â
Over its final two weekends of competition, Brown travels to Columbia (Feb. 15), Long Island University (Feb. 16), and Hofstra (Feb. 16) before hosting Harvard (Feb. 22) in the team's Alumni & Senior Weekend. The Bears then close the regular season at Sacred Heart (Feb. 23).
Â
The 2020 EIWA Championships will take place in Bethlehem, Pa., at Lehigh University from March 6-7. The 2020 NCAA Championships are set for U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minn., from March 19-21.
