Men’s Crew Opens Head of the Charles with Bronze Medal in Men’s Club Eight

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Brown University men's crew opened racing at the 55th Head of the Charles Regatta with a bronze medal finish in the men's club eight event on Saturday afternoon on the Charles River.
 
"I was happy to see considerable improvement over the course of the week," Brown head coach Paul Cooke said. "The oarsmen are working hard and making adjustments. I'm impressed by their enthusiasm."
 
Behind a strong finish, the Bears' A boat (bow 2) in the men's club eight race (event 27) closed with a time of 14:49.530 for third place in a field of 39 entries. Brown trailed second-place Dartmouth (14:48.517) by just 1.013 seconds and topped fourth-place Navy (14:51.274) by 1.744 seconds.
 
The program's B boat (bow 12) took 17th place behind a time of 15:38.781. The Bears topped 18th-place Holy Cross (15:44.861) by 6.080 seconds.
 
With their finishes in the top half of the field, both boats have qualified the Bears entries in the event for next year.
 
Also competing on Saturday, a Brown alumni boat (bow 16) racing for Brown University Alumni finished in sixth place out of 52 entries in the men's alumni eight race (event 23). The crew finished in a time of 15:32.755, edging seventh-place Butte (15:32.918) by 0.226 seconds and falling to fifth-place St. Joseph's (15:31.739) by 1.016 seconds.
 
Brown continues competition at the Head of the Charles tomorrow – Sunday, Oct. 20 – with the men's championship four (1:45 p.m.) and men's championship eight (2:15 p.m.).
