Wrestling Falls to No. 10 Cornell in Ivy Opener, Binghamton in “Rumble and Tumble”

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Jon Viruet won twice on the day, but Brown University wrestling fell to No. 10 Cornell University, 42-6, and Binghamton University, 19-15, in a pair of EIWA dual meets at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Saturday.
Starting the day with their Ivy League opener, the Bears (4-4, 2-3 EIWA, 0-1 Ivy) dropped the decision to the nationally ranked Big Red (7-2, 3-1 EIWA, 2-0 Ivy) – who won their 85th consecutive Ivy dual – prior to falling to the Bearcats (4-3, 4-2 EIWA) in their fifth annual "Rumble and Tumble" meet with the Brown gymnastics program.
"We faced two very strong programs from the state of New York today," Brown head coach Todd Beckerman said. "We fought hard throughout both duals and identified areas we need to work on as we prepare for March. I really want to thank all the fans that came out to our "Rumble and Tumble" meet. They provided a great competition atmosphere for both our team and the gymnastics program."
Viruet (Springfield, Mass.) improved his record to 22-5 on the year and bettered his mark to 7-1 in dual meets and 5-0 in EIWA duals as the Bears closed a five-match home stand. Viruet – ranked No. 18 in the nation at 165 pounds – posted his fourth fall of the year in the Cornell dual.
On the other end of the arena during the "Rumble and Tumble" meet, Brown gymnastics placed second in a quad meet with a score of 191.225.
Next, Brown competes at the Johnson & Wales Wildcat Open tomorrow, Sunday, Jan. 27, before taking part in road duals on Saturday, February 2 at Penn (1:00 p.m.) and at Princeton (5:00 p.m.).
Dual 1: No. 10 Cornell 42, Brown 6

The Bears pulled within 23-6 in the team score after Viruet's pin before the visiting Big Red won their 85th consecutive Ivy League dual.
Viruet (Springfield, Mass.) – ranked No. 18 at 165 – tallied his fourth fall of the year and his 21st win. He improved his dual meet record to 6-1 and 4-0 in EIWA duals. He notched his fall in the third period, pinning Cornell's Andrew Berrevesa at the 5:43 mark.
At 157 pounds, senior Christian LaBrie (Exeter, R.I.) remained within 6-5 of Cornell's Adam Santoro with under 10 seconds left in the third period before dropping a 9-5 decision.
At 174 pounds, freshman Cade Wilson (Nazareth, Pa.) battled No. 15 Brandon Womack, dropping an 8-5 decision.

Five different Bears won victories via decision, but Brown dropped a 19-15 outcome to Binghamton in an EIWA dual on Saturday night in the Bears' fifth annual "Rumble and Tumble" meet with the Brown gymnastics program.
The Bears won four of the dual's final six bouts, but the Bearcats earned bonus points in three of their five wins to edge the hosts.
Seniors Christian LaBrie (Exeter, R.I.), Jon Viruet (Springfield, Mass.), and Ian Butterbrodt (North Andover, Mass.), junior Trey Keeley (Washington, Ill.), and sophomore Nino Bastianelli (Maysville, Mich.) all took wins via decision.
Viruet tallied his 22nd win of the season and improved to 7-1 in duals and 5-0 in EIWA duals. Keeley notched his 14th win of the year, and LaBrie posted his 10th win.
At 125 pounds, Keeley opened the night with a 5-3 win over Steven Bulzomi. He scored three points in the second period and added two more in the third frame.
LaBrie gained a 7-6 decision at 157 pounds over Chris Barker, bringing Brown within 11-6 in the team score. Entering the third period tied at 6-6, LaBrie scored an escape to win the bout.
Viruet – ranked No. 18 at 165 – trimmed Brown's deficit to 11-9 in the team score behind a 3-1 victory in sudden victory over Aidan Monteverdi. Tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, Viruet scored a takedown in the bonus stanza.
Bastianelli earned a 6-2 win over Alex Melikian at 197 pounds, scoring four points in the third period. Butterbrodt closed the dual with a 6-2 win over Joe Doyble at 285 pounds, taking a 5-1 lead into the final frame.
