PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's swimming & diving team defeated Providence 260-102 at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Wednesday.
"We are excited to have been able to start the New Year off early with a meet against our across-town rivals Providence College," said head coach Chris Ip.
The meet against the Friars was a Pentathlon format of the 200 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and 50 freestyle. Each individual competed in all five events with the goal of achieving the lowest overall combined time.
Brown claimed the top 11 spots in the meet with junior Joon Sung (Los Angeles, Calif.) finishing first overall with a combined time of 4:46.84. Freshman Ben Hayes (River Hills, Wis.) made his collegiate debut and came in second (4:49.98) while sophomore Michael Lincoln (Palo Alto, Calif.) was in third (4:53.47). Junior Coley Sullivan (Louisville, Ky.) (4:54.19), freshman Lucas Hess (Salt Lake City, Utah) (4:55.62), junior Cody Cline (Wellington, Fla.) (4:56.31), junior Jagger Stephens (Agana Heights, Hagatna, Guam) (4:56.36), sophomore Alex Park (Dix Hills, N.Y.) (4:57.08), senior Nicholas Brown (Sudbury, Mass.) (4:57.62) and freshman Daniel Alber (Newton, Mass.) (4:59.96) all finished under the 5-minute mark.
The Bears also recorded the fastest time in each event. Lincoln finished the 200 freestyle in 1:41.20, Stephens registered a 50.24 in the 100 butterfly, Sullivan touched in at 52.34 in the 100 backstroke, Hayes finished the 100 breaststroke in 58.19 and Cline completed the 50 freestyle in 20.74.
"Most collegiate teams across the country are currently in a heavy training phase in preparation for their championship schedule," said Ip. "This meet is a great snapshot of where our team's fitness level is at as we prepare for our Ivy League Championships at the end of February."
The Bears next compete in a tri-meet in Cambridge, Mass. against Harvard and Penn on Saturday, January 12 at noon.
