
No. 17 Men’s Water Polo Tops Wagner, 12-9, Falls to Santa Clara, 12-9

PRINCETON, N.J. – No. 17 Brown University men's water polo topped Wagner College, 12-9, after dropping a 12-9 decision to Santa Clara University as part of the Princeton Invitational at DeNunzio Pool on Saturday.
The Bears (3-4) gained separation from the Seahawks (2-4) behind a 4-0 second quarter and nearly rallied to defeat the Broncos (2-1), pulling within 9-8 in the fourth quarter.
Senior Travis Bouscaren (Cambridge, Mass.) scored five goals against Wagner while junior Hudson Rawlings (Murrieta, Calif.) netted four goals vs. Santa Clara. Freshman goalkeeper Ugo Piovan (Vouliagmeni, Greece) made 12 saves against the Seahawks, and sophomore net-minder Riad Hallal (Coronado, Calif.) stopped 11 shots vs. the Broncos.
Next, Brown closes the Princeton Invitational tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 9, with contests against No. 1 UCLA (8:45 a.m.) and Air Force (3:00 p.m.).
Game 1 – Santa Clara 12, No. 17 Brown 9
Junior Hudson Rawlings scored a game-high four goals, but No. 17 Brown fell to Santa Clara, 12-9, on Saturday afternoon in its first game at the Princeton Invitational.
The Bears and Broncos stood tied at 5-5 at halftime, and Brown remained within 9-8 of Santa Clara in the fourth quarter before the Broncos held on for the victory.
Rawlings (Murrieta, Calif.) added three ejections drawn to his game-best four goals. Sophomore Aidan Reilly (Los Angeles, Calif.) tallied a goal, two assists, and two steals while senior Travis Bouscaren (Cambridge, Mass.) totaled a goal, an assist, and two steals.
Junior Armen Deirmenjian (Beverly Hills, Calif.) and freshman Gabe Kaplan (Santa Monica, Calif.) each posted one goal and one assist while freshman Stephen Salle (Chadds Ford, Pa.) netted one goal. Senior Spencer Carroll (Newport Beach, Calif.) posted two assists and two steals, and freshman Matt Simko (Coral Gables, Fla.) drew a team-high four ejections.
In the cage, sophomore goalie Riad Hallal (Coronado, Calif.) made 11 saves.
Rawlings opened the game's scoring just 25 seconds into the contest before the Broncos netted the first quarter's other three goals to take a 3-1 lead at the end of one.
Brown outscored Santa Clara 4-2 in the second quarter to knot the game at 5-5 at halftime. Bouscaren opened the frame's scoring before a tally from Salle kept Brown within 4-3. After SCU went ahead 5-3, Kaplan and Deirmenjian closed the half's scoring with Deirmenjian converting a 5-meter penalty shot.
Following a Bronco marker to start the third quarter, Rawlings evened the score at 6-6 with 5:48 to go in the period. Santa Clara went ahead 8-6 before Rawlings netted his third goal of the game to cut the margin to 8-7. The Broncos brought a 9-7 edge into the final frame.
Reilly initiated the fourth quarter's scoring, trimming the deficit to 9-8 with 5:47 to play. Santa Clara responded with two goals to gain an 11-8 edge with 4:29 remaining. Rawlings' fourth goal of the game cut SCU's advantage to 11-9 with 3:31 left before the Broncos netted the contest's final tally with 3:10 to go.

The Bears outscored the Seahawks 4-0 in the second quarter to take a 7-3 lead at halftime and built an advantage as large as six goals at 12-6 midway through the fourth quarter.
Bouscaren (Cambridge, Mass.) added four ejections drawn and an assist to his quintet of goals. Junior James Thygesen (Menlo Park, Calif.) scored three goals, and senior Spencer Carroll (Newport Beach, Calif.) posted a goal, an assist, and two steals.
Junior Armen Deirmenjian (Beverly Hills, Calif.) tallied a goal and three assists, freshman Matt Simko (Coral Gables, Fla.) registered a goal and four ejections drawn, and sophomore Aidan Reilly (Los Angeles, Calif.) netted one goal.

Brown gained control of the contest in the second quarter, outscoring Wagner 4-0 and bringing a 7-3 edge into the intermission. Deirmenjian started the quarter's scoring before Bouscaren netted the game's next three goals.
Bouscaren finished a personal 4-0 run to put Brown up 8-3 early in the third quarter. A 5-meter penalty shot goal from Reilly helped the Bears maintain a 9-6 advantage heading to the fourth quarter.
The Bears opened the final frame with three straight goals behind a marker from Simko and back-to-back tallies from Thygesen as Brown gained a 12-6 lead with 5:12 remaining. Wagner scored the game's last three goals – all in the final 2:14.
