BRIDGEPORT, Pa. – No. 15 Brown University men's water polo junior attacker James Thygesen and sophomore goalkeeper Riad Hallal have gained weekly honors from the Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC), the Collegiate Water Polo Association announced on Tuesday.
Thygesen (Menlo Park, Calif.) earned NWPC Player of the Week honors while Hallal (Coronado, Calif.) gained NWPC Defensive Player of the Week accolades after the Bears closed their opening weekend with a 12-11 overtime win over No. 8 Pepperdine on Sunday.
Thygesen totaled 10 points on five goals and five assists last week, including two critical goals in the Bears' win over Pepperdine. Against the Waves, he posted two goals – one in the fourth quarter and one in overtime – alongside two assists and a steal.
Hallal registered 18 saves last week, including seven stops in the Bears' victory against Pepperdine. Hallal made several late saves to help Brown pull out the win against the Waves. Last year, Hallal won NWPC Rookie of the Week five times and NWPC Defensive Player of the Week twice.
