Christine Etzel: Senior CLASS Award Profile
A Biology major with a focus on Biotechnology and Physiology, Etzel is a pre-medicine student interested in becoming an Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Surgeon. She earned a competitively funded BrownConnect LINK Summer Funded Award for the summer of 2017, completing independent research and shadowing Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Brett Owens.
In the community, Etzel earned a Global Sport Community Fellowship through Brown's Global Sport Leadership Initiative for the summer of 2018. She designed and implemented a five-week summer soccer program to encourage the growth of the game and support summer sport opportunities for Providence youth in partnership with the Providence After School Alliance (PASA).
A two-time team captain, Etzel has helped lead the team to consistent success with Brown finishing in the top half of the Ivy League standings for three straight years for the first time since 1992-94.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character, and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The candidate class will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches, and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character, and competition.
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2018 NCAA Women's College Cup championship in December.
Video of all Brown women's soccer home contests and all Ivy League games, home and away, will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
Tickets for all Brown women's soccer games can be purchased online, by calling the Brown Athletics Ticket Office at (401) 863-2773, or by walking up to the box office located in the Pizzitola Sports Center, open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
