
No. 18 Men’s Water Polo Finishes Texas Trip with 16-6 Win over Austin

DALLAS, Texas – Freshmen Niko Bhatia and Stephen Salle each scored three goals as No. 18 Brown University bested Austin College, 16-6, on Sunday afternoon at Southern Methodist University's Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center.
Finishing out their trip to the state of Texas, the Bears (7-5) outscored the Kangaroos (0-6), 13-4, after the first quarter to secure the victory.
Bhatia (Los Altos, Calif.) added three steals to his hat trick while Salle (Chadds Ford, Pa.) tacked on two assists. Junior Armen Deirmenjian (Beverly Hills, Calif.) tallied two goals and four steals, and freshman Gabe Kaplan (Santa Monica, Calif.) posted two goals, two assists, and three steals.
Sophomore Daniel Hu (Colleyville, Texas) notched two goals, sophomore Aidan Reilly (Los Angeles, Calif.) finished with a goal, two assists, and five steals, and sophomore Adam Fuller (Santa Barbara, Calif.) chipped in a goal and three steals.
Junior Hudson Rawlings (Murrieta, Calif.) and freshman Andrew Penner (Atherton, Calif.) each netted one goal. Junior Galen Hu (Colleyville, Texas) contributed four assists and three steals as the Bears compiled 25 steals as a team.
In the cage, sophomore goalkeeper Riad Hallal (Coronado, Calif.) and freshman Ugo Piovan (Vouliagmeni, Greece) made six saves and five saves respectively.
After Austin opened the game with a 2-0 lead, Reilly, Deirmenjian, and Bhatia netted three straight goals to give Brown a 3-2 edge at the end of the first quarter.
Salle and Galen Hu extended the run to 5-0 with back-to-back goals to open the second stanza as Brown led 5-2. Following a Kangaroo marker, Fuller and Salle closed the half's scoring to push the Bears ahead 7-3 at the break.
Rawlings opened the second half's scoring, and Deirmenjian and Bhatia both found the back of the net after an Austin goal to stake Brown to a 10-4 advantage entering the fourth quarter.
Bhatia, Kaplan, and Salle scored three unanswered goals to start the final frame, making the score 13-4. Kaplan, Penner, and Hu provided the Bears' final three goals.
The Bears improved to 3-0 on the season against Austin after beating the Kangaroos, 16-4, on Saturday in Sherman, Texas, and 16-7 on Sept. 1 in Providence, R.I.
Earlier in the day, Brown squared off in an exhibition match against Dallas Masters – a team which included Brown men's water polo alumni Warren Smith '17 and Rico Burke '18.
Next, Brown opens Northeast Water Polo Conference play with road match-ups against St. Francis Brooklyn (Sept. 29, 10:00 a.m.), No. 13 Princeton (Sept. 29, 5:00 p.m.), and Iona (Sept. 30, 1:30 p.m.).
