
Women's Crew Finishes 10th at 2018 NCAA Championships

SARASOTA, Fla. – Brown University women's crew placed 10th as a team at the 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Rowing Championships on Saturday at Nathan Benderson Park, recording its 21st top-10 finish out of 22 championships.
On the second and final day of racing, the Bears' collected 14 points for a ninth-place overall finish in the varsity four, 26 points for a 10th-place overall finish in the second varsity eight, and 30 points for a 13th-place overall finish in the first varsity eight to finish the regatta with 70 team points. Brown came in as the third highest program from a non-power five conference.
One of three programs to compete in all 22 NCAA Championships since the event's inception in 1997, Brown won the first varsity eight C final, placed third in the varsity four petite final, and finished fourth in the second varsity eight petite final. The Bears came in just ahead of 11th-place Iowa (69 points) and 12th-place Southern California (67) and just behind eighth-place Yale (93) and ninth-place Princeton (92) in the team standings.
In the morning semifinal session, Brown won its C/D semifinal in the first varsity eight and advanced to the petite final in the second varsity eight and varsity four behind a pair of fifth-place finishes.

All finals took place on Saturday afternoon after officials moved up the racing schedule due to expected inclement weather on Sunday.
Finals Recap
In the Bears' final race of the regatta, Brown's 13th-seeded first varsity eight won the C final for 13th place overall and 30 team points behind a time of 6:29.626. Brown topped 15th-seeded Washington State (6:32.274) by 2.648 seconds as well as 12th-seeded Wisconsin (6:34.924), 16th-seeded Syracuse (6:36.499), 17th-seeded Gonzaga (6:42.241), and 20th-seeded UCF (6:46.069).
Opening the afternoon's racing for the Bears, Brown's 13th-seeded second varsity eight placed fourth in the petite final, 10th overall, for 26 team points, coming just 0.023 seconds out of third in the final with a time of 6:37.855. Brown just trailed third-place and 11th-seeded Princeton (6:37.832) while topping 16th-seeded Syracuse (6:41.132) by 3.277 seconds and eighth-seeded Iowa (6:41.922). Seventh-seeded Stanford (6:34.105) and fourth-seeded Ohio State (6:36.597) finished first and second respectively in the race.
The eighth-seeded varsity four came in third in the petite final, ninth overall, for 14 team points with a time of 7:20.449. Brown beat fourth-place and 11th-seeded Indiana (7:21.549) by 1.100 seconds and trailed second-place and ninth-seeded Stanford (7:19.281) by 1.168 seconds. Fourth-seeded Virginia (7:14.594) won the race while Brown also topped 12th-seeded Washington State (7:25.947) and 14th-seeded Iowa (7:33.197).
California won the team title with 130 points, capturing victories in the first varsity eight and varsity four. The Golden Bears claimed their fourth national title overall and second in the last three years. Washington (128 points), Texas (115), and Stanford (104) rounded out the top-four podium schools. Virginia (104) tied the Cardinal but came in fifth due to Stanford's higher finish in the 1V8. Washington earned gold in the second varsity eight.
Brown placed 10th with 70 team points finishing ahead of 11th-place Iowa (69 points) and 12th-place Southern California (67) and just behind eighth-place Yale (93) and ninth-place Princeton (92). Sixth-place Ohio State (101) and seventh-place Michigan (95) rounded out the top 10 of the 22-team event.
Semifinals Recap
Brown won its C/D semifinal in the first varsity eight and placed fifth in the A/B semifinals in both the second varsity eight and varsity four to open racing on the second day of the 2018 NCAA Championships.
The program's second varsity eight and varsity four will compete in the petite finals while the first varsity eight will race in the C final.
The Bears' 13th-seeded first varsity eight won C/D semifinal two out of lane four with a time of 6:38.881. Brown edged 15th-seeded Washington State (6:41.411) by 2.530 seconds in addition to 20th-seeded UCF (6:43.663), 18th-seeded Navy (6:44.868), and 21st-seeded Rhode Island (6:56.811).
Brown's 13th-seeded second varsity eight placed fifth in A/B semifinal two out of lane six with a time of 6:45.663. The Bears topped eighth-seeded Iowa (6:46.853) by 1.190 seconds, while falling to fourth-place and fourth-seeded Ohio State (6:40.188) by 5.475 seconds. Second-seeded California (6:33.719), third-seeded Virginia (6:35.818), and 12th-seeded Yale (6:37.451) went one-two-three to qualify for the grand final.
The eighth-seeded varsity four came in fifth in A/B semifinal one out of lane one behind a time of 7:27.565. The Bears defeated 14th-seeded Iowa (7:40.332) by 12.767 seconds, while trailing fourth place and fourth-seeded Virginia (7:18.175) by 9.390 seconds. Top-seeded Washington (7:06.152), third-seeded Ohio State (7:12.389), and Michigan (7:14.035) earned the grand final qualifying spots.
Three schools – California, Texas, and Washington – qualified all three boats to the grand finals. Three other programs – Ohio State (1V8, V4), Michigan (2V8, V4), and Yale (2V8, V4) – sent two boats to the grand finals. Princeton's 1V8, Stanford's 1V8, and Virginia's 2V8 rounded out the 18-boat grand final field.

Brown, the No. 12 ranked program in the latest CRCA Coaches Poll, faced 13 ranked teams over the course of the day – No. 1 Washington, No. 2 California, No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 Michigan, No. 5 Stanford, No. 7 Virginia, No. 8 Yale, No. 9 Princeton, No. 10 Iowa, No. 11 Wisconsin, No. 14 Indiana, No. 15 Syracuse, and No. 17 Washington State … The Bears saw eight ranked programs in the semifinals … Brown's 1V8 finished the year with a 29-14 overall record, the 2V8 went 27-17 on the year, and the AV4 finished with a 30-13 mark … The Bears went 16-13 on Sunday after going 6-8 in the semifinals and 10-5 in the finals … Brown concluded the championship with a 38-23 record over two days and 12 races … Brown has now sent 62-of-66 boats to the petite or grand finals in the 22 years of the NCAA Championships.
