Philadelphia, Pa. – Senior middy Stephen Hudak (Rydal, PA) scored his second goal of the game with 5:41 remaining to lift Brown to a crucial 10-9 Ivy League win over Penn Saturday afternoon at Franklin Field.
The win gives the Bears their second straight win, improving to 5-4 on the season, 2-1 in the Ivy League, while Penn falls to 5-6 overall, 1-3 in league play.
It certainly wasn't easy for the Bears, who led 8-2 at the half and saw the Quakers tie the game, 9-9, with 8:49 remaining on Connor Keating's goal.
After Hudak's goal, Bears' goalie Phil Goss (San Francisco, CA) made three saves in the final 5:23 to preserve the victory. Goss finished the game with nine saves.
The Bears were paced by freshman middy George Grell (Short Hills, NJ), last week's Ivy League Rookie of the Week, who had three goals. Senior middy Michael Panepinto (Needham, MA) scored two goals and added an assist, while sophomore attackman Luke McCaleb (Chevy Chase, MD) had a goal and two assists.
Brown started its dominance of the Quakers in the face-off x with senior Ted Ottens (Wilton, CT)) capturing 14-of-20 face-offs, including the first nine to help Brown build an 8-2 advantage.
Penn was paced by Simon Mathias and Kevin Geary, who scored three goals each. Reed Junkin played well in goal for the Quakers, making eight saves.
The Bears opened up a 3-0 lead to open the game on goals by sophomore Jack Kniffin (Darien, CT), Panepinto and McCaleb.
After consecutive goals by McGeary and Adam Goldner for Penn to cut Brown's lead to 3-2, the Bears decided to clamp down Quakers both offensively and defensively.
Brown outscored the Quakers 6-0 for the remainder of the half with Grell scoring the last three goals for an 8-2 Bears advantage at intermission.
Penn cut the Brown lead to two goals, 9-7, with a 5-1 third quarter run, sparked by three goals by Mathias, heading into the final period of play.
The Quakers drew to within a goal when McGeary found the back of the net at the 12:15 mark and tied it at 9-9 following a goal Keating.
Brown returns home to host #3 ranked Yale on Saturday, April 14 at Stevenson-Pincince Field. The game will be aired on ESPN3 and the Ivy League Network with face-off at 1:00 pm.
