Softball Falls at Yale in Nine Innings in Series Finale, 3-2

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Emily Waters and freshman Grace Ladd combined to allow just one earned run over eight innings before Brown University softball fell to Yale University in nine innings, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at DeWitt Family Stadium.

In the series finale, the Bears (9-24, 3-12 Ivy) and Bulldogs (10-27, 6-12 Ivy) stood tied at 2-2 through three innings prior to the hosts forcing home a run with a walk in the bottom of the ninth.

Waters (Northridge, Calif.) threw 5.0 innings in the start, giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits. Ladd (Boulder, Colo.) tossed 3.2 innings in relief, permitting one run on one hit and four walks with two strikeouts in the loss (2-2).

Senior Annie McGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) hit a two-run single in the top of the second while juniors Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.) and Meghan Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) each posted a hit and a run.

For Yale, Miranda Papes hurled a complete-game 9.0 innings, conceding two runs on five hits with two strikeouts in the win (3-11). Annie Tarte and Kortney Ponce each registered one RBI.

McGregor gave Brown a 2-0 lead in the top of the second stanza as she lifted a two-run single to center field, scoring Wimmer and Seitz.

The Bulldogs tied the score a 2-2 in the last of the third as Tarte brought home a run with a groundout and a second run later scored on an error.

In the bottom of the ninth, Yale loaded the bases with a double and two walks before Ponce worked a walk to bring in the game-winning run.

Next, Brown hosts Harvard for a three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 28 beginning at 12:30 p.m. and a single game on Sunday, Apr. 29 at 12:30 p.m.
