
Women's Water Polo Rallies Past No. 19 Harvard in Overtime, 10-8

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Seven different Bears scored goals as Brown University women's water polo rallied past No. 19 Harvard University in overtime, 10-8, in a Collegiate Water Polo Association game on Wednesday night at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
Trailing 8-7 early in overtime, the Bears (14-14, 2-3 CWPA) netted the last three goals of the contest to defeat the nationally ranked Crimson (15-14, 2-3 CWPA).
Senior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) tallied two goals, four steals, and an assist while junior Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) scored two goals, including the go-ahead goal with 22 seconds left in the first overtime period.
Freshman Carissa Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) registered two goals, three assists, and two steals. She tied the game at 6-6 in the fourth quarter and at 8-8 in overtime with her two goals.
Sophomore Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) posted a goal and four steals, and junior McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) notched a goal, three steals, and three ejections drawn. Junior Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) contributed a goal, two steals, and two field blocks, and junior Allison Woo (Arcadia, Calif.) netted a goal.
In the cage, senior goalkeeper Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) made 10 saves.
Facing a 6-5 deficit entering the fourth quarter, Perez drove a shot off the left post and into the goal to knot the score at 6-6 with 4:54 left in regulation. Heilman gave the Bears a 7-6 lead with 3:52 left before the Crimson sent the game to overtime on a goal with 38 seconds remaining in the fourth.
After Harvard pulled ahead 8-7 just over a minute into overtime, Perez tied the game with a goal from the right wing with 1:19 to go in the first overtime. Rosas netted the eventual game-winning goal with 22 seconds left in the first bonus session, receiving a pass on the inside from Perez on the power play and slotting a shot into the back of the net.
McDougal put the game out of reach behind a goal with 19 seconds left in the second overtime period.
At the end of the first quarter, Harvard held a 2-1 lead despite a goal from Woo on a lob shot with 1:15 left in the opening stanza.
The Bears opened the second quarter on a 3-0 run, claiming a 4-2 edge with 5:28 to play until halftime. Heilman started the run before Rosas and Miller both converted goals. A tally from Atwell in between a pair of Crimson markers kept Brown up 5-4 at the break.
Harvard scored the third quarter's only two goals, pulling ahead 6-5, before the Bears outscored the visitors 2-1 in the fourth quarter and 3-1 in overtime.
Next, Brown concludes its regular season with a CWPA league weekend at Princeton with contests against Bucknell (Apr. 14, 2:30 p.m.), the host and No. 11 Tigers (Apr. 14, 7:30 p.m.), and George Washington (Apr. 15, 2:00 p.m.).
