HAMILTON, N.Y. – Junior Tommy Marchin (Algonac, Mich.) trimmed the deficit to one early in the third period, but the Brown men's hockey team fell to Colgate on the road, 3-1, in ECAC play Saturday night at Class of 1965 Arena.
Brown now stands at 6-17-4 overall and 5-14-1 in the ECAC heading into the final weekend of the regular season. Colgate improved to 13-14-5, 9-9-2.
Paul Meyer led all players with three points for the Raiders. Rookie Luke Kania (Chicago, Ill.) made 26 saves in net for the Bears, while Bruce Racine made 27 stops.
Colgate benefited from three power plays in the opening period, and scored on the second opportunity during a scrum in front of the Brown goal, when Mike Panowyk jammed the puck past Kania for the one-goal lead at the first intermission.
Brown outshot the Raiders by a 16-10 margin in the middle period. Paul Meyer scored the lone goal of the period, however, adding another power-play goal at 3:14 for the two-goal advantage heading into the third frame.
Marchin trimmed the lead to two just 2:19 into the second period. Sam Lafferty (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) carried the puck into the offensive end and found Marchin, who blasted a shot right down the middle through traffic for his team-high 10th goal of the season.
Nevertheless, Bobby McMann responded for the Raiders at 11:27, as he flicked a shot that hit the back of Kania and into the net.
Brown pulled Kania for the extra skater with nearly two minutes remaining in regulation, but the Bears could not put a shot past Racine as the Raiders held on for the win.
Colgate narrowly outshot the Bears, 29-28, overall.
Brown will wrap up the regular season next weekend when the Bears host Harvard (2/23) and Dartmouth (2/24).
