PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown field hockey alum Kelly MacKinnon '98 has been selected to a Women's Masters Team in announcement made by USA Field Hockey on Feb. 14. The team will represent the United States at the 2018 FIH Masters World Cup from July 27 to August 5.
The biennial tournament will be held at the Club Egara in Terrassa, Spain, with more than 140 national teams expected to compete in age categories from Over-35 to Over-55. Team USA is sending five U.S. Women's Masters National Teams in the O-35, O-40, O-45, O-50 and O-55 age divisions.
"I am overwhelmed at being selected to represent the country as a member of the Over 40 Masters Field Hockey team," said MacKinnon. "It has always been a dream of mine to wear the USA jersey and the fact that it comes on the 20th anniversary of my first season as a Brown Bear is even more special. I will never forget the chance that Wendy Anderson and Tara Harrington took on me to take a sweeper with goaltending blood and make me the keeper I am today. It is an honor and a privilege to bring the ever true to the red, white and blue and promise to get it done in Spain."
Selection was for the teams was competitive with six trials held on both the East and West Coasts. Performance at the trials was evaluated, with an alternative video, interview and reference assessment available for those unable to attend any of the trials.
"It is not surprising to see that Kelly has continued to play and compete in the sport of field hockey," said former head coach and current Senior Associate Director of Athletics Carolan Norris. "She played two sports at Brown (field hockey & ice hockey) and had a ton of energy and passion for both sports. She has stayed connected to Brown since her graduation and is extremely supportive of both programs."
At Brown, MacKinnon converted from a field player to goalie during the 1994 season. She currently ranks sixth all-time at Brown in career saves with 340 in just three seasons played. Her five career shutouts also ranked ninth all-time. As a senior, she earned the Laura Kavazanjian '06 Award, given to the most outstanding defensive player.
