ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior Tyler Bird (Andover, Mass.) evened the score early in the second period, but the Brown men's hockey team was edged at No. 4 Cornell, 2-1, in Friday night's ECAC contest at Lynah Rink.
Brown (6-16-4, 5-13-1 ECAC) had 16 shots in the third period and outshot the Big Red by a 26-23 margin. Cornell, currently in first place in the conference, improved to 21-3-2, 15-2-2.
Rookie Luke Kania (Chicago, Ill.) made 21 saves in net for the Bears. Fellow freshman Matthew Galajda had 25 stops for the Big Red.
Cornell struck first just 1:27 into the opening period, as Jeff Malott took advantage of numbers and converted a one-timer from Anthony Angello for the 1-0 lead at the first intermission.
Bird evened the score at 3:59 in the second period. Josh McArdle (Roscoe, Ill.) flicked a shot from the blue line at the goal, where Bird was positioned in front and tipped the shot past Galajda for his seventh tally of the season. Charlie Corcoran (New Canaan, Conn.) also assisted on the play.
After Cornell tested Kania with several unsuccessful bids midway through the second frame, the home side took advantage of a power play at 13:26, when Alex Rauter scored in front to push the Big Red back in front, 2-1.
Brown threatened to tie the game during a five-minute major midway through the third, but Galajda kept the Bears at bay to preserve the lead. The Bears continued to attack late in the game with several shorthanded attempts on target, and then made it interesting with a flurry of shots during the final 30 seconds. Nevertheless, Galajda snagged Zach Giuttari's final shot at the buzzer to seal the win.
Brown will visit Colgate tomorrow at 7 PM.
