PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Aidan Reilly scored a hat trick, but No. 4 seed Brown University men's water polo dropped a 13-9 decision to No. 2 seed St. Francis Brooklyn in the third-place game of the 2018 Northeast Water Polo Conference Championship on Sunday morning at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
The No. 16 nationally ranked Bears (18-14) held a 5-3 lead at halftime and an 8-6 edge after the third quarter before the visiting Terriers (9-15) outscored the hosts, 7-1, in the fourth quarter.
"We wanted to win today – it didn't happen, but I got a chance to play everyone," Brown head coach Felix Mercado said. "This senior class left their mark on our program with their work ethic, and we will look to reload and get ready for next year."
Reilly (Los Angeles, Calif.) added an assist to his three goals while senior Travis Bouscaren (Cambridge, Mass.) – a Second Team NWPC All-Tournament Team selection – posted two goals, an assist, and three ejections drawn.
Senior Spencer Carroll (Newport Beach, Calif.) posted a goal and an assist while junior Galen Hu (Colleyville, Texas) and freshmen Niko Bhatia (Los Altos, Calif.) and Matt Simko (Coral Gables, Fla.) each scored one goal.
Freshman Gabe Kaplan (Santa Monica, Calif.) distributed two assists, freshman Andrew Penner (Atherton, Calif.) drew three ejections, and Bhatia added an assist.
In the cage, sophomore goalkeeper Riad Hallal (Coronado, Calif.) made nine saves.
After St. Francis opened the contest with a 2-0 lead, Reilly and Carroll scored back-to-back goals to knot the score at 2-2. The Terriers took a 3-2 edge into the second stanza.
Brown netted all three of the second quarter's goals, staking themselves to a 5-3 advantage at the break. Bouscaren, Reilly, and Hu scored in order during the 3-0 streak.
Following a Terrier goal to start the second half, Simko scored to extend Brown's lead to 6-4. St. Francis equalized at 6-6 before consecutive goals from Bouscaren and Reilly gave the Bears an 8-6 edge heading to the fourth quarter.
St. Francis outscored Brown, 7-1, in the final frame, including a 5-0 run to start the period. Bhatia scored the Bears' goal in the stanza.
