
Women’s Swimming & Diving Defeats Wagner, Falls to Rutgers in Tri-Meet

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Brown women's swimming & diving team defeated Wagner, 253-46, but fell to host Rutgers, 173-127, in a tri-meet on Friday night at the Rutgers Aquatics Center. Freshman Audrey Lukawski (San Francisco, Calif.) highlighted the Bears' performances with two first-place finishes in the breaststroke.
"It's great having a Big 10 team in driving distance and going up against tough competition on the road is exactly what this year's team needs," said head coach Kate Kovenock. "A couple of our women who have put together great training blocks are starting to breakthrough which is exciting to see two weeks out from our Bruno Invite."
To open the meet, a team of freshman Allyson Ty (North Andover, Mass.), senior Tiffany Zhao (Beaverton, Ore.), freshman Andrea Wei (Hopkinton, Mass.) and sophomore Tory Center (Madison, Wis.) were edged by Rutgers by 0:00.53 in the 200-yard medley, finishing with a time of 1:44.84.
Junior Julia Armitage (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) next turned in a strong performance in the 1000 freestyle, claiming second in 10:29.07.
The Bears went 2-3 in the 200 freestyle with senior Jackie Karpowicz (Wakefield, R.I.) (1:53.09) out-touching junior Amelia Gilchrist (Greensboro, N.C.) (1:53.83). Junior Marley Cross (Seattle, Wash.) also placed fifth in the event (1:55.97). Gilchrist later picked up a second-place finish in the 500 freestyle while Armitage (5:10.60) and senior Tatiana Prendella (Bernardsville, N.J.) (5:12.65) went 4-5.
Junior Sarah Welch (Beverly, Mass.) (57.99), Ty (58.30) and freshman Maija Ninness (Santa Barbara, Calif.) (58.84) went 3-4-5 in the 100 backstroke. Welch moved up a spot to second in the 200 of the event, finishing in 2:01.84. Karpowicz (2:06.90) and Ninness (2:10.23) also went 5-6.
Freshman Audrey Lukawski (San Francisco, Calif.) took a first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.66 while Zhao was behind her in second at 1:06.09. Lukawski also won the 200 breaststroke in 2:20.27 while senior Kendall Crawford (Greenwood Village, Colo.) (2:26.37) followed in third and freshman Miku Takabayashi (Glastonbury, Conn.) came in fourth (2:27.11). Takabayashi later won the 200 IM with a time of 2:04.88 while sophomore Han Nguyen (Los Gatos, Calif.) placed third (2:06.70).
Wei was the top finisher in the 200 butterfly with a third-place showing and a time of 2:03.59. The first year also came in third in the 100 of the event, with a time of 55.62. Freshman Caylene Rippon (Hershey, Pa.) came in fourth (2:05.62) in the 200 while senior Emma Wittmer (Edina, Minn.) (56.41) was fifth in the 100.
Cross was edged by Rutgers by 0.07 in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.88 for second while senior Maddie Salesky (San Rafael, Calif.) took third in 23.95. Cross got her revenge in the 100, winning the event in 51.16. Sophomore Claudia Wong (Los Angeles, Calif.) (52.99) and Salesky (53.27) also placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
On the boards, sophomore Julia Feord (Royal Oak, Mich.) was Brown's top finisher in the 1M with a score of 235.70 for fourth place. Junior Emily Zitkovsky (Lexington, Mass.) (233.20) and freshman Liv Mitchell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) (226.45) followed in sixth and seventh, respectively. Feord topped her performance in the 3M and grabbed second with a score of 272.90. Sophomore Marisa Agarwal (Palo Alto, Calif.) was next for the Bears in fifth (243.35).
Brown closed out the meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay in 3:27.68. A team of Wittmer, Prendella, Karpowicz and Cross bested the second-place team by almost three seconds.
The Bears next return to Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center and host the Bruno Invite Friday, Nov. 30 through Sunday, Dec. 2. Brown will welcome Columbia (men only), Dartmouth, Johns Hopkins, Miami (women only), Princeton, Rider and Villanova to the three-day invite.
