PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's swimming & diving team sits in first place with 269 points after day one of the Bruno Invite on Friday at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center. Villanova follows the Bears in second with 210 points while Princeton rounds out the top three with 175.5 points. Freshman Miku Takabayashi (Glastonbury, Conn.) highlighted Brown's performances with a school record in the 200 IM.
"Every season this mid-season check-in is about learning and racing for our women," said head coach Kate Kovenock. "As coaches, our main priority over these is helping our student-athletes figure out how to manage the emotion and the physical stress of a three-day prelim/final meet. That's the top priority, but tonight our women just decided to go for it, and as a result, this team literally got better today. They changed the depth list with their performances. Now it's about recovering and managing the lead up to tomorrow morning's prelims and welcoming our divers into the meet with their first event tomorrow morning."
The Bears opened the meet by winning the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:31.31, tying the school record set last season (Salesky, Seaman, Blake-West, Cross). Senior Maddie Salesky (San Rafael, Calif.), sophomore Tory Center (Madison, Wis.), sophomore Taylor Seaman (Brighton, Mich.) and junior Marley Cross (Seattle, Wash.) combined for the time, with Cross impressing with a 22.23 split in the final leg.
Junior Amelia Gilchrist (Greensboro, N.C.) next placed third overall in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:52.00 while senior Tatiana Prendella (Bernardsville, N.J.) came in sixth (4:56.07) and junior Julia Armitage (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) won the C-Final (4:55.95).
Next came Takabayashi's school record time of 2:01.19 in the 200 IM for a fifth-place finish in the A-Final. The freshman's time almost knocked a full second off of the previous mark of 2:02.11 set by sophomore Han Nguyen (Los Gatos, Calif.) last season. Freshman Audrey Lukawski (San Francisco, Calif.) was the Bears' next top finisher, grabbing third of the B-Final (2:03.24).
Brown had a strong showing in the 50 freestyle, going 2-3-4-5 in the A-Final with Salesky (23.06) leading the pack and closely followed by Center (23.08), Cross (23.09) and Seaman (23.15).
A 400 medley relay team of junior Sarah Welch (Beverly, Mass.), Lukawski, freshman Andrea Wei (Hopkinton, Mass.) and Cross finished third with a time of 3:43.12 to close out the first night of the invite.
The Bears continue competition in the Bruno Invite tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 1, with the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 800 freestyle relay and the women's 1M.
