Women’s Hockey Battles Back for 2-2 Tie at Union

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Brown women's hockey team put together another third period comeback, this time fighting to a 2-2 overtime tie at Union on Saturday at Messa Rink. This is Brown's first tie in over two seasons, with the Bears last recording a tie on Feb. 5, 2016 at Harvard (3-3).

"Today was better in terms of overall effort," said head coach Carisa Wahlig. "We really need to get our power play clicking when the momentum shifts our way."

Brown (5-3-1, 2-3-1 ECAC) struck quickly towards the end of the third period with two goals to tie the contest at 2-2. Sophomore Darby Melia (Marshfield, Mass.) got things started when she scored her first-career goal at 14:13 after she caused a turnover and was then setup by sophomore Kaitijane Blumberg (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.).

Freshman Tina Paolillo (East Haven, Conn.) recorded the game-tying goal soon after at 14:30 when she deflected in a backhand shot from senior Abby Niewchas (Cochrane, Alberta). With the two goals from today, the Bears are outscoring their opponents 10-3 in the third.

In the bonus period, Union (2-9-2, 0-3-1 ECAC) opened with several shots on net with freshman Hayley Kliczko (Niles, Ill.) providing two saves while several Brown defenders blocked shots. The Bears went on the power play at 2:32 but were unable to generate a shot in the sequence. Kliczko finished with four saves in overtime to preserve the tie.

Like yesterday's game, the first period ended scoreless. Kliczko was a big part of the clean frame for Brown, recording 15 saves. Both teams came up empty on power-play chances with the Bears 0-for-1 while the Dutchwomen were 0-for-2.

Brown had a 5-on-3 opportunity at 10:40 of the second but Union was able to fight off both infractions. Shortly after, the Dutchwomen got on the board with a score from Alli First at 15:29. Union was able to take a 2-0 lead just before the end of the stanza at 19:07 with a tally from Katelynn Russ.

Kliczko recorded a career-high 44 saves in the contest while Amelia Murray finished with 27 stops in the opposing net.

Both teams were perfect on the penalty kill overall, with the Bears going 4-for-4 while the Dutchwomen went 6-for-6.

Brown will close out the first half of conference play in 2018 and welcome No. 3/3 Clarkson and No. 9/9 St. Lawrence to Meehan Auditorium on Friday, Nov. 16 (6:00 p.m.) and Saturday, Nov. 17 (3:00 p.m.), respectively. Both contests will be streamed on ESPN+.
