$3 million gift endows Men's Ice Hockey Head Coaching Position
PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – Oct. 24, 2018 – Brown University has announced a $3 million gift from alumnus David Given '75 to endow the Jeanette and Richard Given Men's Ice Hockey Head Coaching Position. This gift is the largest coaching endowment Brown Athletics has ever received and will be used to support a competitive Division I experience for today's young hockey players.
"This historic gift honors the legacy of Brown Ice Hockey by recognizing the importance of talented coaches, which improves our ability to recruit and retain top student-athletes," said Jack Hayes, Director of Athletics. "We appreciate the significant investment that David Given has made to help our men's program reach the pinnacle of its game in the ECAC."
This gift builds on the momentum of the BrownTogether campaign, the most ambitious fundraising effort in the University's history. Campaign priorities for athletics include renovating training facilities and fully endowing varsity programs.
"I am deeply grateful for the experience that I enjoyed as a hockey player at Brown, both as a student and as an athlete," said David Given. "My objective with this endowment is to foster similar experiences for young men who love hockey and want an incredible college education. I am hopeful that this gift will motivate other Brown Hockey lovers to support the improvements needed at Meehan to foster the reemergence of Brown as a powerhouse in college hockey."
Recently, the University moved to expand the scope of campaign facility projects to include a potential renovation within Meehan Auditorium, home of the Brown Men's and Women's Ice Hockey teams. The building, which opened in 1961, would be outfitted with upgrades on par with peer universities' spaces in the ECAC.
"As a student, David Given was a leader in every way on and off the ice. Thanks to his extraordinary generosity, the leadership of Athletic Director Jack Hayes, and the support of the Brown Athletics community, we are taking important steps to reinvigorate Brown Hockey," said Brown University Chancellor Sam Mencoff. "As a lifelong Brown Hockey fan, I am confident that the University's commitment to and support of our hockey program will enhance the experience of our student-athletes in their pursuit of individual excellence and team and league championships."
