
No. 16 Men’s Water Polo’s Rally Comes Up Just Short vs. No. 15 Cal Baptist, 11-10

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Four different Bears scored two goals, but No. 16 Brown University men's water polo's fourth-quarter rally came up just short in an 11-10 setback against No. 15 California Baptist University on Friday afternoon at Santa Clara University's Sullivan Aquatic Center.
Playing in their first game at the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament, the Bears (12-10) pulled within one goal of the Lancers (15-9) three times in the fourth quarter but could not tie the game after entering the final frame trailing 9-6.
Senior Spencer Carroll (Newport Beach, Calif.), junior James Thygesen (Menlo Park, Calif.), and sophomores Aidan Reilly (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Adam Fuller (Santa Barbara, Calif.) each scored two goals. Carroll added three steals, two field blocks, and an assist while Fuller dished out two assists.
Junior Armen Deirmenjian (Beverly Hills, Calif.) tallied a goal, three steals, and three ejections drawn, and freshman Stephen Salle (Chadds Ford, Pa.) netted one goal. Junior Hudson Rawlings (Murrieta, Calif.) chipped in three steals and two field blocks, and freshman Niko Bhatia (Los Altos, Calif.) distributed two assists.
In the cage, sophomore goalkeeper Riad Hallal (Coronado, Calif.) made four saves in the first half, and freshman net-minder Ugo Piovan (Vouliagmeni, Greece) stopped three shots in the second half.
After Cal Baptist opened the game with a 3-0 lead, the Bears answered with a 4-1 run to tie the game at 4-4 with 1:15 to play in the first quarter. Thygesen cut the score to 3-1, and following a CBU goal, Deirmenjian, Carroll, and Salle scored in order to even the count at 4-4. The Lancers took a 5-4 lead into the second stanza.
Thygesen and Reilly both countered goals from the Lancers in the second quarter as Brown remained within 7-6 of Cal Baptist at the break.
Following over seven minutes of scoreless action to start the third quarter, the Lancers netted goals with 32 seconds and three seconds left in the period to stake themselves to a 9-6 advantage entering the fourth quarter.
Fuller netted back-to-back goals to start the final frame, pulling Brown within 9-8 with 6:08 to play. After a CBU goal, Carroll scored to trim the margin to 10-9 with 4:01 left. On the heels of another Lancer marker, Reilly cut the deficit to 11-10 with 1:20 remaining before CBU held on for the win.
Next, Brown continues play at the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 20, with match-ups against No. 18 Loyola Marymount University (12:00 p.m. ET) and Fresno Pacific University (6:40 p.m. ET).
