
Field Hockey Cruises Past Holy Cross, 4-0

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Brown field hockey team overpowered Holy Cross and claimed a 4-0 victory on Tuesday night at the Hart Turf Field & Hart Track in non-conference action. Eight different Bears registered at least a point in the shutout.
Brown (5-8) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half and outshot Holy Cross (3-11) 16-6. Defensively, senior Katie Hammaker (Ephrata, Pa.) came up with three saves in the clean sheet in the opening frame.
Junior Gina Openshaw (Annapolis, Md.) got things started at 4:26 with her team-leading seventh goal of the season on a penalty corner. Freshman Danielle van Rootselaar (Bilthoven, Netherlands) tallied the assist on the play.
Junior Hannah Leckey (Madison, Conn.) increased Brown's lead to two with her second tally of the year, coming at 18:31 with a helper from sophomore Anagha Nayak (Ann Arbor, Mich.). Anagha's twin sister, Anya Nayak (Ann Arbor, Mich.), got in the mix and recorded her first goal of the season shortly before halftime, putting back a rebound at 30:08.
Junior Corinne Condie (St. Louis, Mo.) provided the lone goal of the second half at 40:48 off a penalty corner for a 4-0 Brown advantage. Senior Rachel Lanouette (Windham, N.H.) and senior Maddie Ayles (Westwood, Mass.) teamed up for the assists.
Hammaker added two more saves in the second while junior Allee Ayles (Westwood, Mass.) entered at 54:02 and contributed two stops. Marcia LaPlante ended the night with 11 saves in the opposing cage.
With tonight's win, Hammaker reaches 20 victories for her career which is tied for sixth in the Brown record book with Kristen Hodavance '08 and Mara Spaulder '86.
Brown will next host Cornell at Goldberger Family Field on Saturday, Oct. 20 for an Ivy League contest starting at 12:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
