Fencing Teams Combine for 10-2 Mark at Second Conference Meet

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Brown University women's fencing tallied a 6-0 record on the day, and Brown men's fencing added a 4-2 mark as the Bears compiled a 10-2 combined record at Northeast Fencing Conference Meet No. 2 on Sunday at Boston College's Flynn Recreation Complex.
The Bears' women's team claimed a share of the NFC women's title and posted victories over Brandeis (17-10), MIT (16-11), Dartmouth (23-4), Florida (22-5), Vassar (19-8), and Tufts (23-4). The men's side topped Dartmouth (19-8), Florida (23-4), Vassar (15-12), and Tufts (23-4), while falling to Brandeis (15-12) and MIT (16-11).
At the squad level, women's foil and women's sabre both went 6-0, and women's epee finished 5-1. Women's foil recorded a 42-12 composite mark while women's epee and sabre both registered 39-15 composite records. Men's epee posted a 5-1 mark (36-18 composite), men's sabre went 4-2 (32-22 composite), and men's foil finished 3-3 (35-19 composite). Women's foil finished NFC competition undefeated.
Freshman Signe Golash (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the Bears with an undefeated 14-0 record in women's sabre. In women's foil, junior Ebba Brunnstrom (London, England) went 16-2 while both senior Clarissa Allen (Newtown, Pa.) and freshman Elena Jin (Fremont, Calif.) notched 13-5 marks. Freshman Arianna Ferretti (Old Field, N.Y.) charted a 14-4 record in women's epee, and freshman Sofija Podvisocka (Dublin, Calif.) went 12-3 in the same weapon. Freshman Wassa Bagayoko (New York, N.Y.) added a 4-1 mark in women's sabre.
Senior Samuel Koch (San Francisco, Calif.) paced the men's team with a 16-2 record in men's epee. In men's sabre, freshman Sean Feeney (Riverside, R.I.) and senior Alexander Catoya (Rutherford, N.J.) went 15-3 and 13-5 respectively while senior David Adler (Bellevue, Wash.) and junior Umar Masood (Pittsford, N.Y.) tallied marks of 15-3 and 14-4 apiece.
Next, Brown competes at the Eric Sollee Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 3 at Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass.
