Masood Paces Fencing at Competitive Philadelphia Invitational

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Junior Umar Masood paced the Bears with an 11-7 record as Brown University fencing combined for a 2-10 record at the highly competitive Philadelphia Invitational hosted by the University of Pennsylvania on Sunday at the Tse Ping-Cheng Cheung Ling Sports Center.
Both the Brown men and women's sides went 1-5 on the day, competing against a total of five ranked teams. The men's team notched a victory over Drew (14-13), while falling to NYU (19-8), North Carolina (17-10), Yale (19-8), No. 7 Penn (22-5), and No. 2 Columbia (20-7). The women's team defeated Wagner (22-5), while dropping decisions to NYU (19-8), North Carolina (18-9), No. 8 Northwestern (19-8), No. 7 Temple (19-8), and No. 9 Penn (23-4).
At the squad level, men's epee went 1-5 (21-33 composite record), men's foil finished 1-5 (20-34), and men's sabre went 0-6 (12-42). For the women, epee finished 1-5 (21-33), foil went 1-5 (22-32), and sabre notched a 1-5 mark (17-37). Men's epee tallied a 5-4 win over UNC, men's foil topped Drew (7-2), and women's epee, foil, and sabre all defeated Wagner via scores of 8-1, 9-0, and 5-4 respectively.
Masood (Pittsford, N.Y.) – a 2017 NCAA qualifier – led the Bears with 11 wins on the day in men's foil. Senior Samuel Koch (San Francisco, Calif.) paced men's epee with a 10-8 record while freshman Sean Feeney (Riverside, R.I.) tallied seven wins to lead the men's sabre squad.
Senior Clarissa Allen (Newtown, Pa.) and freshman Signe Golash (Syracuse, N.Y.) registered identical 10-8 marks in women's foil and women's sabre respectively. Freshman Arianna Ferretti (Old Field, N.Y.) led women's epee with eight wins.
Next, Brown competes at Northeast Fencing Conference Meet No. 2 on Sunday, January 28 at Boston College's Flynn Recreation Complex in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
