NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Trailing 2-0, the Brown women's hockey team scored an early third period goal to pull within one, but Yale generated two scores to go up 4-1 and eventually held on for a 4-2 win over the Bears on Thursday night at Ingalls Rink. Senior Samantha Swanstrom (Ham Lake, Minn.) and freshman Maddie Sisokin (Oakville, Ontario) generated Brown's goals in the contest.
Yale (6-10-4, 4-7-2) opened the first period with a score by Julia Yetman at 4:24 to take an early lead. The Bears kept the Bulldogs off board for the remainder of the frame, blocking seven shots.
Brown (2-18-0, 1-12-0 ECAC) had a two separate 5-on-3 power plays in the second period but it would be Yale who scored in the stanza as the Bulldogs returned to even strength and went up 2-0 with a one timer from Emma Vlasic at 15:51. After trailing 9-2 in shots for the first, the Bears would outshoot the Bulldogs in the second, 14-5, with nine coming on the power play.
Swanstrom got the Bears on the board at 5:15 of the third when she collected her own rebound and put it back at a tough angle on the side of the net for her fifth of the year. Sophomore Sena Hanson (New Brighton, Minn.) and senior Sam Donovan (New Brighton, Minn.) assisted the score that pulled Brown within one (2-1).
The Bulldogs countered and regained a two-score lead (3-1) at 6:44 with a goal from Greta Skarzynski coming off of a rebound. Mallory Souliotis increased Yale's advantage with a goal at 9:57 for a 4-1 lead.
Sisokin scored her first career goal at 18:21 with Hanson picking up her second assist of the night and sophomore Lucinda Quigley (Newton, Mass.) also adding a helper.
Yale capped off the third with an 11-7 lead in shots that helped the Bulldogs have an overall 25-23 edge for the contest.
Sophomore Calla Isaac (Sherwood Park, Alberta) made 17 saves in the match-up while senior Julianne Landry (Hanover, Mass.) finished the third and made four stops. Gianna Meloni made 21 saves in the Yale net.
Both teams were shutout on the power play on the night with the Bears 0-for-3, with all of their opportunities in the second period, and the Bulldogs 0-for-2.
With two assists, Hanson registered her team-leading fourth multi-point game of the season.
Brown closes out its series with Yale on Saturday, Jan. 20 at Meehan Auditorium with a 1:00 p.m. game. The contest will be broadcast on the ILN and ESPN3.
