
No. 6 Women's Water Polo Tops No. 8 GW, Falls to No. 7 Bucknell at CWPAs

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – No. 6 seed Brown University women's water polo topped No. 8 seed George Washington University, 11-7, after falling to No. 7 seed Bucknell University, 10-7, in a pair of consolation games at the 2017 Collegiate Water Polo Association Championship on Saturday.
Competing at Indiana University's Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center, the No. 25 nationally ranked Bears (20-10) used two 4-0 runs to gain separation from the Colonials (13-19) after dropping a decision in their first game of the day to the Bison (14-17).
The Bears will face No. 9 seed St. Francis (Pa.) (11-21) in the seventh-place game on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. Bucknell advanced to the fifth-place game against No. 4 seed Indiana (20-10) on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. while George Washington's run at the tournament came to an end.
Junior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) led the Bears with seven goals on the day while senior Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.) garnered Player of the Game honors in Brown's win over GW.
Game 1 – No. 7 Bucknell 10, No. 6 Brown 7
Junior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) scored five goals, but No. 6 seed Brown fell to No. 7 seed Bucknell, 10-7, in a consolation game at the CWPA Championship on Saturday afternoon.
The Bears remained within 3-2 of the Bison late in the second quarter, but Bucknell used a 5-0 run spanning the second and third stanzas to take an 8-2 edge that it would not relinquish. The Bison scored eight of their 10 goals either on the power play or on a 5-meter penalty shot.
Heilman tied for the game high in goals to go with two field blocks. Sophomore McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) tallied a goal, an assist, and three ejections drawn while classmate Allison Woo (Arcadia, Calif.) netted a goal.
In the cage, junior goalie Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) registered five saves, two steals, and an assist. Senior Shannon Crowley (Seal Beach, Calif.) and sophomore Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) each came up with two steals.
After the Bison took a 1-0 lead through the first quarter, Heilman scored on a no-look, backhanded shot to pull Brown within 2-1 early in the second quarter. Heilman's second goal of the game made it 3-2 before the Bison brought a 5-2 lead into halftime.
Bucknell scored the first three goals of the third quarter to cap its 5-0 run, moving ahead 8-2 with 4:46 to play in the stanza. Heilman converted from the right wing, and Woo netted a goal from the left side to cut Brown's deficit to 9-4 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Bears outscored the Bison, 3-1, in the final quarter with Heilman registering a pair of goals and Miller adding a tally.
For Bucknell, Marta Considine and Colleen Barron scored five and three goals respectively while goalie Manuela Herrera made seven saves.
Brown and Bucknell split the season series after the Bears defeated the Bison, 8-7, on Apr. 9 in the two teams' regular season CWPA match-up.

Game 2 – No. 6 Brown 11, No. 8 George Washington 7
Senior Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.) scored three goals and earned Player of the Game honors as No. 6 seed Brown beat No. 8 George Washington, 11-7, in a consolation game at the CWPA Championship on Saturday night.
The Bears outscored the Colonials 4-0 in the second quarter turning a 4-3 deficit into a 7-4 halftime lead and used another 4-0 run spanning the third and fourth quarters to expand a 7-6 edge into an 11-6 advantage.
Four different Bears – senior Shannon Crowley (Seal Beach, Calif.), junior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.), and sophomores Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) and McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) – netted two goals apiece.
Miller came up with a team-high four steals alongside three ejections drawn while freshman Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) came up with three steals. Heilman totaled three field blocks, three ejections drawn, and two steals.
In the cage, junior net-minder Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) blocked nine shots.
The Bears and Colonials traded goals in the first quarter with Crowley converting twice, including on a 5-meter penalty shot, to give Brown an early 2-1 lead. A Heilman goal helped keep the Bears within 4-3 of the Colonials after one.
Brown scored four goals in the second quarter while blanking the Colonials in the stanza to pull ahead 7-4 at the break. Kolokotronis started the run before Miller netted back-to-back goals with the first coming off a Kolokotronis pass. Heilman capped the run with 3:23 to go in the half.
After GW came within 7-6 early in the third quarter, the Bears responded with four unanswered goals. McDougal started the rally with consecutive goals prior to Kolokotronis closing out the third quarter's scoring and lifting Brown to a 10-6 edge going to the fourth frame.
Kolokotronis capitalized on a feed from McDougal to open the final period, and the Bears permitted just one goal over the final 13:45 to seal the win.
For GW, Scarlett Hallahan led the team with three goals while goalkeeper Katherine Moeller stopped eight shots.
Brown swept the season series from GW as the Bears beat the Colonials, 12-6, on Apr. 9 in the two teams' regular season meeting.
