BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Senior Marisa Kolokotronis scored five goals, senior Shannon Crowley earned Player of the Game honors, and No. 6 seed Brown University women's water polo bested No. 9 seed St. Francis University (Pa.), 12-3, in the seventh-place game of the 2017 Collegiate Water Polo Association Championship on Sunday morning.
Closing their run at Indiana University's Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center, the No. 25 nationally ranked Bears (21-10) held a 6-1 lead at halftime and 8-2 edge through three quarters en route to the win over the Red Flash (11-22).
A First Team All-Tournament selection, Kolokotronis added four steals and two ejections drawn to her five-goal performance while junior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) tallied three goals and two ejections drawn.
Crowley (Seal Beach, Calif.) posted a goal, three steals, and two assists while sophomores McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.), Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.), and Allison Woo (Arcadia, Calif.) netted one goal apiece. Woo tacked on two steals and an assist.
In the cage, junior goalkeeper Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) totaled three saves and three steals through three quarters of play. Freshman goalie Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Ill.) made four saves in the fourth frame.
The Bears opened the game with a 2-1 lead after the first quarter behind goals from Heilman and Woo.
Brown broke open the contest in the second quarter, outscoring the Red Flash, 4-0. Kolokotronis started the run with a power play goal off a feed from Crowley before Crowley converted a 5-meter penalty shot. Kolokotronis found the back of the net again before Heilman scored off an assist from Miller to push Brown ahead 6-1 at the intermission.
Rosas initiated the third quarter's scoring with a goal on the left wing before St. Francis scored to pull within 7-2. Miller netted the stanza's only other tally, sending a one-time shot into the cage off a pass from Woo as the Bears led 8-2 through three quarters.
Kolokotronis scored three times in the fourth quarter, and Heilman contributed a backhanded goal as the Bears took the final period from St. Francis, 4-1.
Brown swept the season series from St. Francis as the Bears beat the Red Flash, 9-3, on Apr. 15 in the two teams' CWPA regular season meeting.
During the 10-year tenure of head coach Felix Mercado, the Bears have now posted a winning record (21-10) for the seventh time and tallied their sixth 20-win season under Mercado.
