
No. 6 Seed Women's Water Polo Falls to No. 3 Hartwick in CWPA Quarters, 11-6

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Junior goalkeeper Marisol Dakan made 11 saves, but No. 6 seed Brown University women's water polo fell to No. 3 seed Hartwick College, 11-6, in the quarterfinals of the 2017 Collegiate Water Polo Association Championship on Friday afternoon at Indiana University's Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center.
The No. 25 nationally ranked Bears (19-9) scored back-to-back goals to pull within 7-5 of the No. 15 ranked Hawks (23-9) midway through the third quarter before Hartwick finished the game on a 4-1 run.
Brown will face No. 7 seed Bucknell (13-17) in the consolation semifinals on Saturday at noon while Hartwick will take on No. 2 seed and No. 9 ranked Princeton (23-3) in the semifinals on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) turned aside five shots in the third quarter as part of her ninth double-figure save effort in 14 starts this season and came up with two steals.
Senior Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.) tallied two goals, an assist, four steals, and two ejections drawn while fellow senior Shannon Crowley (Seal Beach, Calif.) registered a goal, four steals, and two ejections drawn.
Sophomore Allison Woo (Arcadia, Calif.) posted a goal and two assists, freshman Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) added a goal and an assist, junior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) netted a goal, and sophomore Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) came up with three steals.
After Hartwick opened the game with a 1-0 lead, Heilman converted on the right wing off a feed from sophomore Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) to tie the score at 1-1. The Hawks netted the quarter's final two goals to bring a 3-1 edge into the second stanza.
Less than a minute into the second quarter, Atwell answered a Hartwick tally with a goal from the right wing to cut the deficit to 4-2. Dakan made a point-blank save midway through the frame before the Hawks scored twice to pull ahead 6-2 with 2:11 to play in the half. A goal from Kolokotronis kept the Bears within 7-3 of the Hawks at the break.
Brown netted back-to-back goals to open the second half, trimming the Hawks' margin to 7-5 with 4:48 to go in the third quarter. Crowley scored the first goal from five meters before Woo found the back of the net from the right wing. Hartwick answered with two goals, including a 5-meter penalty shot, before Kolokotronis scored with three seconds left in the frame to pull Brown within 9-6 heading to the final period.
The Hawks scored the fourth quarter's only two goals to close out the game.
For Hartwick, Zsofia Polak scored a game-high five goals, and Lena Kotanchyan netted three goals. In the cage, Josette Santos turned aside 12 shots. The Hawks beat the Bears for the second time this season after taking the two teams' regular season CWPA match-up, 15-12, on Apr. 15 in Providence.
